railroad has underperformed on his watch, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sorobancap.com\/\" class=\"icon none\">a letter the fund sent<\/a>\u00a0the railroad operator\u2019s board Sunday.<\/p>\n<p> Soroban is a longtime Union Pacific<br \/>\n        UNP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209717171\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.36%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       investor, one of the company\u2019s biggest shareholders with a 1%-plus stake valued at about $1.6 billion, the letter said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Soroban argues that Union Pacific,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/norfolk-southern-nsc-q4-earnings-report-2022-11674674383?mod=article_inline&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">the largest freight railroad operator<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. with a market capitalization of nearly $120 billion, has ranked worst in key operating metrics including safety, volume growth and total shareholder return during Fritz\u2019s eight-year tenure despite the strength of its railroad network. The Omaha, Neb., railroad\u2019s returns to shareholders, including dividends, are the worst on a percentage basis among so-called Class 1 freight railroad operators in that period, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/hedge-funds-commodity-bets-soar-after-russias-invasion-of-ukraine-11647176401?mod=article_inline&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">The $10 billion hedge fund<\/a>\u00a0is pushing for railroad veteran\u00a0Jim Vena, Union Pacific\u2019s chief operating officer from 2019 to 2020, to take the top post instead. Soroban believes the company\u2019s stock price could double in two years under Vena, who was in the running in 2021 to be CEO of Canadian National Railway Co., given his operational experience in the industry, said the letter.
