Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know about Energy\u2019s new conclusion, as reported by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98New_intelligence_contributed_to_conclusion\"><\/span>\u2018New intelligence\u2019 contributed to conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Energy Department\u2019s judgment that a lab mishap was behind the COVID-19 outbreak was based on \u201cnew intelligence\u201d and further study, according to the Journal\u2019s reporting. <\/p>\n<p>But some who read the undisclosed intelligence called it \u201cweak,\u201d according to The New York Times, which also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/26\/us\/politics\/china-lab-leak-coronavirus-pandemic.html\">reported<\/a> on the determination. The Energy Department characterized its judgment as being made with \u201clow confidence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Exactly what comprises the new intelligence isn\u2019t yet known, but it was notably gathered by the Energy Department\u2019s network of national laboratories, a different intel-gathering method than what was likely relied upon by the FBI, both newspapers reported. <\/p>\n<p>The Energy Department\u2019s conclusion is an update from its previously undecided position.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Energy_now_squares_with_FBI\"><\/span>Energy now squares with FBI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The FBI has previously determined with \u201cmoderate confidence\u201d that a lab leak caused the COVID outbreak, according to WSJ.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, four other agencies and the National Intelligence Council believe with \u201clow confidence\u201d that the pandemic was sparked by natural transmission involving an infected animal, per the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two other agencies, one of which was identified as the CIA, still haven\u2019t drawn a conclusion. <\/p>\n<p>There is agreement across the government that the virus wasn\u2019t the product of a biological weapons program in China \u2014 a conspiracy theory that has sometimes been conflated with concerns about a lab leak. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The classified intelligence report cited by The Wall Street Journal was reportedly provided to some congressional lawmakers and the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The position change is noted in a recent update to a 2021 document by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, per the Journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"White_House_still_says_no_%E2%80%98definitive_answer\"><\/span>White House still says no \u2018definitive answer\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Sunday responded to the WSJ report, saying the intelligence community hasn\u2019t come up with a \u201cdefinitive answer\u201d on the question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere is a variety of views in the intelligence community. Some elements of the intelligence community have reached conclusions on one side, some on the other. A number of them have said they just don\u2019t have enough information to be sure,\u201d Sullivan said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s what I can tell you. President Biden has directed, repeatedly, every element of our intelligence community to put effort and resources behind getting to the bottom of this question \u2026 But, right now, there is not a definitive answer that has emerged from the intelligence community on this question.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GOP_calls_for_action_against_China\"><\/span>GOP calls for action against China<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A number of GOP lawmakers quickly jumped on the WSJ report to call for action against the Chinese Communist Party. Others said it proved that suspicions of a lab leak were correct. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe left spent the past 2yrs trying to censor the truth &amp; cover up for Communist China, but the facts are undeniable,\u201d Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenRickScott\/status\/1629865664306372611?s=20\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cThe CCP is evil. Its virus killed millions &amp; Xi will stop at nothing to destroy the U.S. It\u2019s time to hold this evil regime accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether there should be consequences for Beijing if the U.S. definitively determines a lab leak caused the pandemic, Alaska Sen.
