United States CBDC would \u2018crowd out\u2019 crypto ecosystem: Ex-Biden adviser  &#8220;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.cointelegraph.com\/images\/840_aHR0cHM6Ly9zMy5jb2ludGVsZWdyYXBoLmNvbS91cGxvYWRzLzIwMjMtMDMvNDdmODQxZjEtNDAxNS00MzVmLWFkOGUtYzU4MjBiYTQwYTFmLmpwZw==.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\" data-v-48054ca8>The creation of a United States digital dollar would \u201ccrowd out\u201d the cryptocurrency ecosystem and protect the national security of the U.S., according to a former top adviser in president Joe Biden\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Daleep Singh \u2014 a former deputy national security adviser for international economics in the Biden administration \u2014 made the comments at a Feb. 28 Senate Banking Committee hearing, suggesting that cryptocurrencies facilitate ransomware attacks and contribute to the evasion of U.S. sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Warren Highlights Need for Crypto Regulation to Fight Ransomware Attacks, Protect National Security\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DNHi8ftmMLQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>Singh believes the U.S. government embracing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) \u201cis the single best step that we could take [to protect national interests] because it would crowd out the ecosystem of crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singh frames \u201ccrowding out\u201d as a desirable development in his discussion of a CBDC but the phrase is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly used by economists to refer to how investments from governments can drive down or eliminate investments from private firms that could limit job creation and slow economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Cointelegraph laMay, Franklin Noll \u2014 the president of Consulting firm Noll Historical Consulting \u2014 also suggested that CBDCs could crowd out crypto, noting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe downside for crypto is that CBDCs will work to crowd out private cryptocurrencies, especially stablecoins focused on retail payment areas. Cryptocurrencies will stay in niches in the payment system where they serve unique functions and provide specialized services.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While China has implemented its own CBDC, the U.S. is still exploring the potential benefits and risks associated with CBDCs.<\/p>\n<p>Yana Fanusie, the policy lead at the crypto advocacy group Crypto Council for Innovation, said in a March 1 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2023-02-28\/china-is-leading-the-way-on-cbdcs-fanusie-says-video\">interview<\/a> with Bloomberg that China is \u201cleading the way\u201d on CBDC development while the U.S. is \u201con the sidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Bank of England has no tech skills to issue CBDC yet: Deputy governor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He added that developing alternative financial rails could spell \u201ctrouble\u201d to the U.S. as they affect the \u201cpotency\u201d of its power to enforce sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Others are more critical of the digital dollar plans, such as Representative Tom Emmer, who introduced legislation on Feb. 22 prohibiting the Federal Reserve from implementing monetary policy based on a CBDC and issuing a digital dollar directly to individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Emmer is concerned that a CBDC could impact the financial privacy of American citizens, and be developed into a \u201cdangerous surveillance tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Biden admin wants to create a surveillance-style digital dollar that is NOT:<\/p>\n<p>\u274cOpen<br \/>\u274cPermissionless<br \/>\u274cPrivate<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why I introduced legislation to prevent unelected bureaucrats from s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ping Americans of their right to financial privacy. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/55e2nfmlJy\">pic.twitter.com\/55e2nfmlJy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Emmer (@GOPMajorityWhip) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOPMajorityWhip\/status\/1630629291837800457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"markets_outlook\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
