That\u2019s probably because he was a two-year-old in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, as yet blissfully unaware of scheming alliances, tiki torches or the age-defying magnetism of Jeff Probst. But 23 years l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ater, Fritzler is about to embark on the desert island journey of a lifetime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Season 44 premieres this week, he\u2019ll be playing to be the show\u2019s third-ever Canadian champion, after Season 41\u2019s Erika Casupanan and Season 42\u2019s Maryanne Oketch. Fritzler, a recent law graduate now living in Saskatoon, recently returned from his time on the remote Fijian island and sat down with us to talk about what it was like to compete on the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> show he grew up watching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>READ:\u00a0How HBO\u2019s <em>The Last Of Us<\/em> transformed Alberta into a zombie wasteland<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>What\u2019s your relationship to <em>Survivor<\/em>?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Survivor<\/em>\u00a0was a family show for us\u2014my grandmother would come over to watch. When I was a kid, I loved watching all the different characters and archetypes on the show. As I got older, I fell in love with the show again from a gaming and strategy perspective. That was the holy grail: to figure out how to play this thing like the perfect board game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tell me more about that last bit.<\/b><b> What is unique about the gaming aspect of <em>Survivor<\/em>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first season, they brought out the concept of alliances and it blew people\u2019s minds\u2014they thought contestants were just supposed to go with their gut and vote people out. As the seasons stacked up, a meta-narrative developed, and you saw people playing the way they watched other people play. Every once in a while, someone was able to break that. By the time Season 44 rolls around, you have all these different things going on: you have alliances, you have sub-alliances, different takes on the game. So the thing that keeps the game fresh is the people who get pumped into it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#039;Survivor 44&#039; First Look Trailer | New Season This Spring\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1SNEBXUUBw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>What made you think you\u2019d be good at it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wasn\u2019t sure I would be, but I wanted to try. I\u2019m fresh out of law school, I love people, and I\u2019m a problem solver. So I look at people like problem sets, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> good at building relationships with people quickly. I\u2019m good at identifying people\u2019s interests and figuring out what they want and how I can adapt to make myself seem like I\u2019m good for them\u2014in the game! That sounds really manipulative. I don\u2019t do that in real life. But in the game it\u2019s about getting to know people and asking how can I use these relationships\u2014which are genuine\u2014to keep myself out of the boat but still playing a game where I\u2019m doing cool stuff and having fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What was the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lication process like? You\u2019re a guy from Saskatoon and you want to be on the show\u2014what happens next?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, that doesn\u2019t sound like the start of a successful story. They didn\u2019t even know where Saskatchewan was! I was going, \u201cNo, I swear, I\u2019m Canadian, please let me on the show!\u201d I sent in an audition tape on their website like everyone else. I did that every single year that I could. <em>Survivor<\/em> was opened to Canadians <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three or four years ago. I\u2019d update my tape every year.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Then you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wait and hope that you get that phone call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tell me about the phone call.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a world-changer. I spent a lot of time knowing that Canadians couldn\u2019t play. And then all of a sudden you get the phone call that you <em>are<\/em> heading to Fiji, that this <em>is\u00a0<\/em>happening. All of a sudden your mindset changes. You\u2019re actually going to the beach, you\u2019re actually going to meet Jeff Probst. It\u2019s a complete shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So you get on the plane, you land in Fiji, and there\u2019s Jeff Probst. What was that moment like?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was one of the most surreal moments of my life, honestly. I\u2019ve watched the show for a long time. You know the camera shots, you know what\u2019s going to happen. And then you\u2019re standing there, and Jeff Probst is a real human being, and he\u2019s giving you the spiel to kick off the show. It was surreal. I was thinking, <em>If I shouted at him right now, he was going to answer!<\/em> And I\u2019m there beside all these other people who share this dream. It was a crazy experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is it exactly like it looks in TV?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It feels very authentic. It is 100 per cent real. When the sun sets, it\u2019s dark in the jungle, you know? It felt exactly the way I wanted it to feel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>And then you met all the other cast members. What was that like in those first few moments?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First impressions are huge. As soon as you\u2019re dropped on the beach, there are 17 other people with huge grins and scary eyes looking at you, and you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen. They might be your best friends or they might be your worst enemies, but we\u2019re all there because we love <em>Survivor<\/em>. When I applied to this it was my dream, and now I\u2019m sitting here with people who have the exact same thing in mind: we all want to get to the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Does that change the way you play the game? The fact that all the cast members are superfans?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It changed how I approached the game,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sure. In <em>Survivor<\/em>, you have to make some assumptions. Everybody knows the game. It makes it a lot faster and a lot more intense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How did you prepare for the show?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing I did was finish law school, because that was mentally taxing and something I had to do anyway. But I looked at everything I did as\u00a0<em>Survivor<\/em> training. In all my negotiation classes in law school, I thought, <em>I might use this on the island<\/em>. And I did a ton of puzzles\u2014everything I could get my hands on\u2014and watched a ton of <em>Survivor<\/em>. I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kept my regular workout routine, because I didn\u2019t want to start trying to become a power lifter and then go and break my back\u2014that would\u2019ve been a huge downer\u2014but I amped everything up to nine or 10 as the date neared.\u00a0 I learned how to make fire, too. I watched a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>. I got my flint and my fire supplies and I was making fire like crazy. I was assuming, no matter what, that I was going to have to make fire on the island, so I wanted to make sure I had it down pat.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Meet Kane, a law student whose main goal is to become the Sole <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Survivor?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Survivor<\/a> and is ready to dig deep!\ud83d\udcaa\ud83c\udffd <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uP8bt3o5QX\">pic.twitter.com\/uP8bt3o5QX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SURVIVOR (@survivorcbs) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/survivorcbs\/status\/1628107394319253522?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 21, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>What was the worst part of being on the island?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one thing that everyone asks about is the survival element, because it is real and it is intense. That\u2019s the most daunting. To show up on an island and not have any food, to be sleeping on the ground or whatever shelter you can muster. Those are hard things. But honestly, you\u2019re just having so much fun. Nothing really shook me to my core.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Canadians have put on a really good show these past few seasons. Are you prepared to carry that legacy?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a really tough mantle to carry. When I was watching Season 41, I was like, <em>I hope Erica wins!<\/em> But also, I hope she doesn\u2019t win, so that I can be the first Canadian to win. And then she won! And I was like, <em>Marianne\u2019s so awesome but I hope she doesn\u2019t win!<\/em> What\u2019s going on here?! I think Canadians have waited so long to be on the show that when we go out there, we\u2019re ready to perform and to play hard. I have big shoes to fill. I\u2019m hoping I can live up to the expectation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Were you allowed to tell anyone about <em>Survivor<\/em>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For a little while I was living this double life: a law student by day and a <em>Survivor<\/em> contestant by night. And it\u2019s weird because it\u2019s a very important part of you that you\u2019re getting more and more invested in and you can\u2019t tell anyone. But I\u2019m excited now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the response been like so far?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a long shot to get a person from Saskatchewan on the show. It\u2019s weird <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> to deliver to people\u2014everyone has a slightly different reaction. They either freak out or they don\u2019t believe it, but the end response is that people are super excited. I have professors reaching out, and people from the law community. Everyone in my life has been super supportive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What was your biggest takeaway?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get dropped on an island, the only things you have are the clothes on your back and who you are, your personality. That\u2019s all you get. All I had out there was Kane Fritzler. You learn you have to rely on that. The other thing is that you meet all these different wonderful people. So it was just a good people experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Will you stay in touch? Any lifelong alliances?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll wait and see how it plays out. I\u2019ve got to watch the season before I reach out. But I could see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are you ready for your time in the spotlight, to light up Saskatchewan?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am so ready for it to premiere. I anticipate Saskatchewan rallying around me.
