In the first four days since the \u201cdigital yuan\u201d (also known as \u201ce-CNY\u201d) hard wallets became accessible to the islanders, only 625 Hongkongers had actually obtained them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stcn.com\/article\/detail\/804323.html\">reported<\/a> by the local <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper on Feb. 28, the city of Shenzhen installed the machines, dispensing the hard wallets for digital yuan, the first of a kind in the whole country. Due to the city\u2019s unique location as a gateway from Hong Kong to mainland China, the machines were programmed to serve the citizens of Hong Kong exclusively. <\/p>\n<p>The goal of the initiative, launched by the Bank of China and smart card provider Octopus Card, was to issue 50,000 hard wallets by March 31. However, during the first four days after the machines\u2019 installation, only 625 wallets have actually been demanded by the customers. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>arently, even the 20% discount on purchases from 1,400 local vendors, subsidized for the CBDC owners by the government, hasn\u2019t become a decisive factor for the potential holders. <\/p>\n<p>However, as the Securities Times highlights, the local authorities will continue their efforts to promote the digital yuan for Hong Kong citizens, including the project of a SIM-card hard wallet, which would combine the financial and communicational functions. The reason lies in a greater political mission to integrate the recently independent island city in the Guangdong\u2013Hong Kong\u2013Macao Greater Bay Area. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Related: <\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Hong Kong\u2019s crypto ambition gets subtle nod from Beijing<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The adoption of e-CNY in the country is still rather slow, despite the Bank of China&#8217;s efforts. In October 2022, two years after the CBDC\u2019s introduction to the market, cumulative e-CNY transactions only crossed 100 billion yuan ($14 billion).
