Not that Abrahamson is taking any credit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cYou do know when somebody\u2019s brilliant,\u201d he says, noting that Mescal\u2019s audition tape for the role of Connell Waldron was one of the first they received. \u201cEverybody in the office was just blown away by it. I wasn\u2019t some Svengali who saw a little spark. It really didn\u2019t take a genius.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Mescal went from <em>Normal People<\/em> (for which he won a BAFTA TV award), to a supporting part in Maggie Gyllenhaal\u2019s <em>The Lost Daughter<\/em>, to his first Cannes Film Festival appearance in 2022 courtesy of leading roles in both <em>God\u2019s Creatures <\/em>and <em>Aftersun<\/em>. Alongside a number of projects shot and awaiting release, he also landed arguably his biggest project to date when he was cast by Ridley Scott to lead his long-awaited <em>Gladiator<\/em> sequel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful how meteoric that transformation is: from <em>Normal People <\/em>to <em>Aftersun<\/em> through to <em>Gladiator<\/em>. It\u2019s amazing,\u201d says Abrahamson. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t write it. It almost has a cartoon s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> three-panel structure to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Abrahamson, himself an Oscar nominee for 2015\u2019s <em>Room<\/em> (starring Brie Larson), suggests that this transformation is due to Mescal\u2019s unique pairing of a \u201cvery particular masculinity as well as this great vulnerability,\u201d adding that \u201cthere aren\u2019t that many people who have that combination of screen presence and delicacy, and also just pure skills and instinct as an actor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But he also credits the actor\u2019s careful choices and the fact he hasn\u2019t simply taken advantage of his rising status to agree to everything that comes his way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cYou can\u2019t know in advance which projects are going to really work. Actors have to rely on their instinct and their biggest point of control is just saying \u2018yes\u2019 and \u2018no\u2019 to things,\u201d he notes. \u201cAnd I think he\u2019s been really true to his own instincts about doing work that he cares about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Aftersun<\/em>, for example, was a small film that few people knew about until it was announced as premiering in Cannes\u2019 Critics\u2019 Week sidebar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cBut [Mescal] bought into the vision of the director. He recognized somebody with real talent and understood how he would fit into that role,\u201d says Abrahamson. \u201cIt was a brilliant choice. Similarly with <em>God\u2019s Creatures<\/em> and the other decisions he\u2019s made \u2014\u00a0 he\u2019s just gone for work that\u2019s meaningful and, as it happens, has kind of made those choices so brilliantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    On the subject of <em>God\u2019s Creatures<\/em>, while <em>Aftersun<\/em> has garnered more headlines since bowing in the south of France, the intense Irish drama \u2014\u00a0which was arguably the bigger project heading into Cannes, thanks to his co-star Emily Watson and with A24 already on board \u2014\u00a0is now getting some attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The psychological drama \u2014\u00a0set in a windswept fishing community \u2014 opened the Dublin International Film Festival on Feb. 23, where local boy Mescal was the star attraction, posing for selfies and signing autographs on the red carpet. The following day, he was on hand to present his co-star Watson with the festival\u2019s Volta Award, celebrating the careers and contributions of international filmmakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In an intimate ceremony in the bowels of Dublin\u2019s Merrion Hotel, Mescal recalled a moment during during the <em>God\u2019s Creatures <\/em>shoot when Watson expressed her concern to him that her performance in one of the more emotional scenes might not have been good enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI sat across from her for five weeks and I\u2019d seen her work in <em>God Creatures<\/em>, which is just absolutely phenomenal,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to see somebody turn in that performance and care so much, and be so devoid of ego to be actually concerned that it wasn\u2019t good, I just thought: you can\u2019t fake that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Abrahamson admits he told Mescal on the set of <em>Normal People<\/em> that life would probably never be the same for the actor afterwards.
