Today, he premieres a music video for the chilling \u201cKraken\u201d \u2014 a mid-album cut that comes as close to capturing the pitfalls of life on the high seas as any modern artist since the pirate song <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ldf7T6TlV-o\">salad days<\/a> of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rWzR9_po5CA&amp;ab_channel=MODESTMOUSEVEVO\">mid-aughts<\/a> \u2014 with The FADER.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The new clip comes courtesy of Victoria Shen, the San Francisco-based sound artist and experimental turntablist who performs as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/evicshen\/?hl=en\">evicshen<\/a>. She generated today\u2019s terrifying visual treatment by running \u201cprompts relating to deep sea creatures, intestines and machinery\u201d through an AI tool called Disco Diffusion, creating a twisted aesthetic to match the emphatically bleak ethos of Reyes\u2019 soundscape. Lines like \u201cI can unhook my jaw \/ I can make dust of my bones\u201d are rendered genuinely disturbing alongside algorithmic depictions of tentacled, toothy viscera.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cVictoria and I met up in New York in October 2019 after a number of online exchanges following a cold email in which I gushed over our mutual friend Ryan Martin (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.factmag.com\/2014\/01\/03\/deleted-hill-inside-the-wyrd-world-of-new-blackest-ever-black-recruit-secret-boyfriend\/#:~:text=The%20recording%20alias%20of%20North,split%20vinyl%20releases%20and%20cassettes.\">Secret Boyfriend<\/a> not <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ryan-martin-1b959a93\/\">Dais<\/a>, though he\u2019s great, too),\u201d Reyes tells The FADER. \u201cI was there for a wedding and Victoria was playing at Market Hotel in a trio with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mihohatori\/?hl=en\">Miho Hattori<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/shadowbox4u\">Bonnie Baxter<\/a>. The next day we played pinball for like eight hours straight, maybe more, then saw Denton Mutoids <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fleshnarc.bandcamp.com\/music\">Flesh Narc<\/a> at Hart Bar. Was classic. Victoria\u2019s a visionary in so many ways and one of my best friends at this point \u2014 her restless curiosity and drive inspire me in everything I do. I was thrilled to be able to link up on this project. When she started utilizing AI in surreal, occasionally disturbing ways \u2014 in that way where you\u2019re kinda nauseated and titillated at the same time \u2014 I had to let her in on my \u2018I want to become an octopus\u2019 fantasy. Obviously, she related.
