researchers say<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Bald eagle nest failures and deaths are piling up at an \u201calarming rate\u201d\u00a0as a result of the highly infectious avian influenza, University of Georgia researchers announced this week.<\/p>\n<p>The avian influenza strain known as H5N1 is killing an unprecedented number of mating pairs of the national symbol birds,\u00a0University of Georgia researchers concluded\u00a0in<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-27446-1\"> a study published in Nature\u2019s Scientific Reports.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven just one year of losses of productivity like we\u2019ve documented regionally is very concerning and could have effects for decades to come if representative of broader regions,\u201d said Nicole Nemeth, an associate professor at UGA\u2019s college of veterinary medicine, who led the study with 10 other researchers. \u201cThere were nights where I couldn\u2019t sleep based on what we were hearing and seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Are we ready: <\/strong>Is the US prepared for a possible bird flu pandemic? What we know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_did_the_research_show\"><\/span>What did the research show?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe had reports from people who faithfully monitor eagle nests year after year with these heartbreaking stories of an adult eagle found dead below their nest, Nemeth said. \u201cWithin a few days, often its mate and the chicks were also found dead below the nest. It is clear the virus is causing nest failures.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just under half the bald eagle nests in coastal Georgia fledged an eaglet in 2022, 30% below average for the season.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The influenza was documented in Georgia\u2019s bald eagles for the first time in April 2022\u00a0after dead eagles were found in Chatham, Glynn and Liberty counties in March.<\/li>\n<li>The success rate for nests in one Florida County was 50% lower than average, dropping from an average of 86.5% to 41%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_bald_eagles_elsewhere\"><\/span>What about bald eagles elsewhere?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There have been many reports of bald eagles dying across the U.S. and Canada, said Nemeth, a part of the University of Georgia&#8217;s Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study has diagnosed cases of the influenza in\u00a0high numbers of bald eagles and other avian species from member states. The U.S. Fish &amp; Wildlife Service also revealed the influenza is widespread in bald eagles, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eagles and other raptors probably contract the virus by eating other diseased birds, federal officials say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">BACKGROUND: <\/strong>Bird flu costs accumulate as avian influenza outbreak enters second year<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_other_birds_have_been_affected\"><\/span>What other birds have been\u00a0affected?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Since it was first detected\u00a0in the United States in January 2022, the H5N1 virus has exploded in birds across the country, federal data shows, but also infects other wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/avianflu\/avian-flu-summary.htm\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the virus has<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has struck more than 58 million domestic poultry animals, including chickens and turkeys, in 777 outbreaks.<\/li>\n<li>Been the subject of 4,672 reports in wild birds.<\/li>\n<li>Infected at least 146 avian species .<\/li>\n<li>Been documented in every state but Hawaii and every Canadian province and territory.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/animalhealth\/animal-disease-information\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-2022\/2022-hpai-mammals\">Has spread to 17 other wildlife species\u00a0in 22 states<\/a>, including 60 red fox, 16 harbor seals and 14 s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ed skunks.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly half the infected red foxes were reported in Michigan and Wisconsin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nemeth suspects the number of wild bird cases \u201cis drastically underreported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will submit one snow goose, for example, and it will test positive for the virus,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then they\u2019ll tell you, \u2018Well, there are thousands of geese dying at the same site.\u2019 But it only goes down as one infected bird.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t contain the virus, and we can\u2019t vaccinate wild birds,&#8221; Nemeth said. &#8220;But we can document the losses and try to help conserve affected species and populations the best we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experts say it&#8217;s likely the virus is being spread when birds or other mammals eat infected birds.\u00a0The virus affects birds by impairing their nervous systems and\u00a0making them unable to fly.
