Discovery, film and TV aren\u2019t the only mediums where iconic characters like Batman, Harley Quinn and the\u00a0Joker are taking on new lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Thanks to an expansive, multiyear first-look deal with Spotify, DC has attracted new and returning fans to its rich IP \u2014 without being beholden to the intricacies of a m<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed-out multiverse, the same actors\u00a0portraying its characters or the costs of a typical high-wattage and effects-heavy superhero production.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The partnership kicked off in earnest last year, when Spotify and DC released an original story about Batman for an audio <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> penned by <em>The Dark Knight <\/em>scribe David S. Goyer. Starring Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, <em>Batman Unburied <\/em>took on a decidedly darker tone as a psychological thriller that followed Bruce tracking down a serial killer and confronting his own demons along the way.\u00a0The series was a massive success, at one point unseating <em>The Joe Rogan Experience <\/em>on Spotify\u2019s top podcast charts and landing on the audio giant\u2019s year-end Wrapped list for most-anticipated podcast in the U.S.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    This year,\u00a0Spotify has returned with its latest DC installment from <em>Homecoming <\/em>writer Eli Horowitz. Starring Christina Ricci as Harley Quinn, Billy Magnussen as The Joker and (surprise!) Justin Hartley as his own version of Batman in a world separate from that of <em>Batman Unburied<\/em>. The audio show, <em>Harley Quinn and The Joker: Sound Mind, <\/em>serves as a prequel of sorts as it tracks the beginning of Dr. Harleen Quinzel\u2019s\u00a0journey from star psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum to the villain known as Harley Quinn. But unlike other depictions of Harley\u2019s origin story, where the Joker is the one responsible for her transformation, Spotify and Horowitz\u2019s <em>Harley Quinn <\/em>shifts the balance of power back to Harley.\u00a0In this version, Harleen is driven by her desire to help her ailing father and influenced by her growing disillusionment with the inner workings of Gotham City and the power leveraged by the rich Wayne family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The series also comes as Spotify is reevaluating its overall podcast strategy as the market matures. For its original programming, which the DC podcasts fall into, the audio giant is eyeing large reach while also having a \u201cunique\u201d story that cuts through the noise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt certainly doesn\u2019t mean that they need to be IP-driven or celebrity driven,\u201d Julie McNamara, who oversees Spotify\u2019s original programming and exclusive partnerships, tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cBut we really do have to be intentional around what kinds of things can break through the clutter. This is clearly\u00a0a maturing market in audio, and we need to be smart about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Of course, it doesn\u2019t hurt to have a podcast with recognizable characters in Harley Quinn and the Joker and in talent like Ricci and Magnussen. Peter Girardi, who leads Blue Ribbon Content and Warner Bros. Animation, tells <em>THR <\/em>that Horowitz brought the initial concept for the audio series to the studio. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI\u2019ve worked on projects where Harley kind of earns her way into it and as she gets stronger and more confident, and as she has built her relationship with [Poison Ivy]\u00a0or whoever it is, she kind of becomes the\u00a0Harley that we know and love,\u201d Girardi says.\u00a0\u201cEli \u2026 knew that she was going to know what she wanted and be the manipulator and have the agency from the beginning, which I thought was great. It was a story that I hadn\u2019t seen or heard before.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    When it came to casting the series\u2019 lead, the team quickly closed in on Christina Ricci.\u00a0\u201cWhen I saw Misty on <em>Yellow Jackets, <\/em>I was like, \u2018Holy shit, that\u2019s Harley,\u2019\u201d Girardi remembers, referring to Ricci\u2019s role on the Showtime hit series. \u201cThat kind of unhinged but calculating, unhinged but nefarious [role] \u2014 that\u2019s\u00a0real Harley energy there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Though Ricci says she was initially a bit \u201cintimidated\u201d to take on Harley Quinn, she appreciated the more feminist approach to the character and thought her outside perspective as someone who isn\u2019t a megafan of the comics could help further humanize the role. \u201cHarley is a real woman in this and an intelligent woman, an educated woman, and I really liked that,\u201d Ricci says. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Recording for the series took place over the course of a few weeks in a studio in Burbank, where Ricci was at times joined by Magnussen and Hartley, as well as supporting cast members like Amy Sedaris, Fred Melamed, Elias Koteas and Stephen Root. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    For his part, Magnussen says he took inspiration from Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger for his own interpretation. To nail the iconic Joker laugh, Magnussen remembers sitting at home or being in the car trying out different versions of the villain\u2019s maniacal cackle. \u201cI probably looked like a maniac,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Hartley, whose role is primarily spent as Bruce Wayne rather than Batman, says the faster production timeline helped him flex a \u201cdifferent muscle\u201d as an actor. And because there was no concern about wasting film on rehearsals, he and his costars felt like they could really play around with their characters. \u201cYou don\u2019t have the luxury of anything physical or facial expressions or anything like that. You\u2019re playing with your voice, so a lot of things that you would normally do in maybe a physical manner, you have to make up for that in other ways,\u201d Hartley says. \u201cJust because you can\u2019t see the actor doesn\u2019t mean the actor\u2019s not acting like a complete buffoon and they\u2019re gesticulating and doing all kinds of weird stuff to get their mind in the right place.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Spotify, which will host its Stream On event on Wednesday, has not yet announced its next project with DC. But all three stars of <em>Harley Quinn and The Joker <\/em>tell <em>THR <\/em>they\u2019re interested in getting back in the recording booth for more.
