Except for your loyal correspondents at TNW, of course, as automated output can\u2019t compare to our flair and original reporting (at least, that\u2019s what I\u2019m telling my overlords).<\/p>\n<p>Other journalists, however, aren\u2019t as blessed. Last week, the owner of Britain\u2019s Daily Mirror and the Express became the latest media magnate to add bots to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>room.<\/p>\n<p>The publisher, Reach, has posted several AI-written articles on the<span>\u00a0local news site In Your Area. According to Reach CEO Jim Mullen, they include a listicle on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/seven-things-to-do-in-newport\/\">7 things to do with visitors to show off Newport<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cThat is responsible use of AI.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Mullen told human journalists they have no need to worry. He said his own reporters had suggested using the AI system \u2014 called Scribe \u2014 and that the tool would allow them\u00a0\u201cto focus on stuff that they want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was based off of content from our journalists, and the decision to run it was made by the editor: that is responsible use of AI,\u201d Mullen added.<\/p>\n<p>His words, however, are unlikely to allay the concerns of his employees. Reach, which owns hundreds of national, local, and online publications,<span> <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/01\/11\/mirror-publisher-reach-sack-200-journalists-ad-revenues-slump\/\">was already planning extensive job cuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Discover_the_future_of_tech\"><\/span>Discover the future of tech!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Join us at TNW Conference June 15 &amp; 16 in Amsterdam<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company is far from the only media brand to bring AI to the pressroom. Here\u2019s how other outlets are experimenting with automation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Associated_Press\"><\/span>The Associated Press<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the earliest exponents of AI content<span style=\"background-color: rgba(46, 146, 255, 0.2);\"\/>\u00a0was the Associated Press (AP). In 2014, the company\u00a0began automatically generating summaries of earnings reports.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.ap.org\/announcements\/automated-earnings-stories-multiply\">AP said<\/a> the system was producing around 3,000 of these stories every quarter \u2014 a tenfold increase over what AP reporters and editors created previously.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MSN\"><\/span>MSN<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 2020, Microsoft announced that it was replacing pesky humans in its news division with shiny AI. The workers had been curating and editing stories for the homepages of MSN and the Edge browser. The Cupertino company sacked the journalists <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/may\/30\/microsoft-sacks-journalists-to-replace-them-with-robots\">despite warnings<\/a> that substituting them for software was risky.<\/p>\n<p>The warnings proved prescient. MSN went on to run a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/msn-is-publishing-more-fake-news\">range of bogus stories<\/a>. Highlights included Bigfoot sightings, Mermaid captures, and Grimes suing Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CNET\"><\/span><span>CNET <\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Tech site CNET was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaelBreton\/status\/1613110185995771905?s=20&amp;t=nqoUqkA0vrBB-ZGhf-lmwQ\">recently caught<\/a> posting machine-written stories. The company never publicly announced the move, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/cnet-is-experimenting-with-an-ai-assist-heres-why\/\">came clean<\/a> after an outcry from critics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>CNET described the initiative as a mere experiment. And like many experiments, the results were unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>The text generators were making \u201cvery dumb errors,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/cnet-ai-errors\">according to Futurism<\/a>. The site was forced to add lengthy corrections to some of the articles.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"BuzzFeed\"><\/span>BuzzFeed<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>In January, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/buzzfeed-to-use-chatgpt-creator-openai-to-help-create-some-of-its-content-11674752660\">the Wall Street Journal revealed<\/a> that BuzzFeed would use AI to enhance its quizzes and personalise some content. The move came after another round of redundancies at the struggling publisher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The initiative is a collaboration with ChatGPT creator OpenAI. In what will surely reassure BuzzFeed staff, ChatGPT <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/01\/12\/chatgpt-writes-term-sheet\/\">recently claimed<\/a> that AI \u201cwill never entirely replace human journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Next_Web\"><\/span><span>The Next Web<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Much to my chagrin, even your favourite tech site has dabbled in AI-generated content. Most famously, our erstwhile colleague Satoshi Nakaboto produced automated reports on cryptocurrencies. Mercifully, the loathsome Nakaboto was laid off years ago.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, AI has been producing images for the superlative TNW newsletter.
