Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a> the app<br \/>\n                            <\/button>\n                          <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>                        US President Joe Biden is once again proposing\u00a0higher tax rates on billionaires, wealthy investors, and companies in his budget for the 2024 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>In his budget request to Congress scheduled to be released Thursday, Biden is calling for a minimum tax rate of 25% on billionaires, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-09\/biden-to-urge-25-billionaire-tax-big-levies-on-rich-investors?srnd=premium\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported, citing an unnamed White House official familiar with the proposal. This will be a five percentage point jump over the minimum 20% tax rate that he called for previously. Axios <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/03\/09\/biden-tax-reform-proposal#\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">confirmed the information<\/a> in a Thursday report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden is also proposing doubling the capital gains tax rate to 39.6% from 20%, per Bloomberg. Other changes Biden is proposing include an increase of the corporate tax rate to 28% from 21%, and increasing the top tax rate for Americans earning over $400,000 to 39.6% from 37%, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>The US President&#8217;s proposal came after he renewed his call for minimum billionaire taxes in his State of the Union address on February 7. At the time, he was calling for a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/billionaire-tax-president-biden-share-buybacks-state-union-sotu-speech-2023-2\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">minimum 20% tax bracket for the super-wealthy.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        &#8220;This minimum tax would make sure that the wealthiest Americans no longer pay a tax rate lower than teachers and firefighters,&#8221; the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/02\/06\/fact-sheet-the-biden-economic-plan-is-working\/\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\">White House<\/a> said in a fact sheet ahead of Biden&#8217;s February speech. It said in the document that billionaires pay an average tax rate of just 8% in a typical year.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Biden has been pushing for higher taxes for ultra-wealthy households since March 2022, the move is likely to face opposition from Republicans, who control the House of Representatives. The US President had been unable to pass tax hikes when Democrats held sway over both chambers.<\/p>\n<p>The budget comes amid a fierce debate in Congress over the\u00a0debt ceiling \u2014 which the Democrats want to raise from $31 trillion\u00a0before the US runs out of money as soon as July.\u00a0The ceiling is the maximum amount the government can borrow for expenses it has already approved.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the Biden administration wants to raise the country&#8217;s revenue to fund spending instead of relying on debt.
