\n It\u2019s a culture clash for the pandemic age.<\/p>\n

A sushi restaurant in a poverty-stricken neighborhood of San Francisco has come under fire for serving elite customers inside giant \u201cbubbles\u201d \u2014 amid a homeless crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n

Critics claim that Michelin-starred restaurant Hashiri, whose \u201cgarden igloos\u201d were erected on the Mid-Market sidewalk to accommodate pandemic safety restrictions, is making a spectacle of the disproportionate wealth gap in one of the country\u2019s wealthiest regions. They\u2019re also accusing the restaurant\u2019s management of insensitive and racist rhetoric. Recently, general<\/a> manager Kenichiro Matsuura referred to the local \u201ccrowd\u201d as \u201cnot too favorable\u201d in an interview with ABC7.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo \u2026 the *homeless* can watch as the wealthy five-star diners can safely eat \u2026 cake?\u201d wrote one critic on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat idea! without these important domes what would the homeless people be able to press their noses up against,\u201d added another.<\/p>\n

But restaurant owners say they\u2019re struggling, too, and the city\u2019s inability to support their homeless population is bad for small businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people who come by and spit, yell, stick their hands in people\u2019s food, discharging fecal matter right by where people are trying to eat,\u201d Matsuura also told the San Francisco Chronicle. \u201cIt\u2019s really sad, and it\u2019s really hard for us to operate around that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their menu features a five-course kaiseki and omakase edomae-style sushi dinner at $200 per person. Their take-out menu also includes a $500 \u201cUltimate Trifecta\u201d bento box and a $160 D.I.Y. wagyu sukiyaki kit.<\/p>\n

Neighboring businesses, along with residents and shelter advocates, are pointing their fingers at local lawmakers, who they allege are using Hashiri as a scapegoat for their ineffective leadership in the face of a homelessness crisis, which has descended upon the Mid-Market neighborhood. They\u2019re suing the city for negligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe city has created and perpetuated these conditions through its pattern and practice of tacitly treating Mid-Market as a \u2018containment zone\u2019 that bears the brunt of San Francisco\u2019s homelessness issues, and its failure to take action to address these issues,\u201d the lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n

At the same time, their Public Health Department has made multiple attempts to shut down Hashiri\u2019s domes, claiming they don\u2019t comply with the ventilation needed to keep customers safe from coronavirus aerosols.<\/p>\n

The Chronicle\u2019s restaurant critic, Soleil Ho, wrote in a recent column, \u201cI think what really gets people going about the dome is that it\u2019s a perfect symbol of the complete inadequacy of our social safety net: In a queer reversal, the dome is a shield against, not for, the ones who need sheltering the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cAn unhoused person\u2019s tent is erected in a desire for opaqueness and privacy, a space of one\u2019s own, whereas the fine dining dome invites the onlooker\u2019s gaze as a bombastic spectacle \u2026 for the housed, being seen eating on the street or in a park is a premium experience, especially now.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the igloos were temporarily put out of commission by the health inspectors, the restaurant was able to resurrect the concept as of last week, with a few structural modifications.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep going! Don\u2019t be deterred by the liberal haters!\u201d said one follower on Facebook. \u201cYou are not to blame for the druggies and drifters accumulating in Nancy Pelosi\u2019s district.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
