The X-Files<\/em><\/strong> is about to get animated.\u00a0The X-Files: Albuquerque<\/em><\/strong> will be an animated comedy series spun-off from the iconic cult series, and before you ask, no \u2013 it doesn\u2019t feature Mulder and Scully. Instead, the series is taking a\u00a0Star Trek: Lower Decks<\/em> app<\/a>roach and will be a comedy focusing on new, bumbling characters who just happen to inhabit the\u00a0X-Files<\/em> world. So before I go any further, I have to ask: does anyone think this is a good idea?<\/p>\n

TV Line has the scoop on the\u00a0X-Files\u00a0<\/em>animated series\u00a0The X-Files: Albuquerque<\/em>, which \u201cwill center an office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases too wacky, ridiculous or downright dopey for Mulder and Scully to bother with. They\u2019re essentially the X-Files\u2019 B-team.\u201d And boy oh boy, do I not like this idea! It\u2019s not that I\u2019m against an\u00a0X-Files<\/em>\u00a0animated comedy. The original\u00a0X-Files<\/em> had plenty of funny episodes. What\u2019s turning me off here is the focus on alternate characters.<\/p>\n

This approach makes sense for something\u00a0Star Trek: Lower Decks<\/em>, since\u00a0Star Trek<\/em> has spent decades introducing new main characters, and its fictional world leaves plenty of room for background Starfleet members suddenly coming front and center. But Mulder and Scully are essential to making\u00a0The X-Files<\/em> work. And if you don\u2019t believe me, just take a look at the later seasons where David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson had their roles reduced. Sure, even if you liked spending time with the new agents, the cases were never as interesting without Mulder and Scully. So to suddenly create an entirely new\u00a0X-Files<\/em> show with new characters just feels\u2026wrong. At least to me \u2013 you may disagree.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m also a big proponent of letting things\u00a0end<\/em>. When\u00a0The X-Files<\/em> revealed it was going to have a revival season, I was cautiously interested. I liked the idea of seeing Mulder and Scully again, but I also had no problem with the show coming to a close. Sure enough, the revival, which ran for two seasons, ended up being kind of terrible, save for two or three episodes.\u00a0The X-Files<\/em> remains a classic; iconic; one of my all-time favorite shows. But it had its run, and maybe it\u2019s time to retire the brand for good. Or maybe I\u2019m completely wrong here. I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll find out eventually, since the truth is out there.<\/p>\n

Rocky Russo<\/strong> and Jeremy Sosenko<\/strong> will write the X-Files: Alberquerque\u00a0<\/em>pilot and serve as executive producers alongside\u00a0X-Files<\/em> creator Chris Carter and former\u00a0X-Files<\/em>\u00a0writer Gabe Rotter. Bento Box (Bob\u2019s Burgers<\/em>) will serve as the animation studio.<\/p>\n
