Amidst the political push, attracting global giants to invest in the union\u2019s domestic production has been a key strategy \u2014 with Intel\u2019s plan to construct a massive chip plant in Magdeburg, Germany, considered a big boost for the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>But now, Intel is asking the German government for an additional \u20ac4 billion to 5 billion in subsidies to move forward with the project, Bloomberg <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-07\/intel-wants-5-billion-more-subsidies-from-germany-for-new-chip-plant?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">reports<\/a>, citing people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2022, Intel\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/newsroom\/resources\/eu-news-2022-press-kit.html#gs.0kgtyt\">announced<\/a> an initial investment plan of over \u20ac33 billion (reaching \u20ac80 billion within the next decade) to strengthen the EU\u2019s semiconductor industry across the entire value chain. Now, however, the company expects to spend \u20ac30 billion \u2014 thus requiring further government aid. On the plus side, the research centre in France and the facility\u2019s expansion in Ireland seem to be on track.<\/p>\n<p>EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has characterized Intel\u2019s investment as \u201cthe first major achievement\u201d under the new Chips Act. \u201cIt\u2019s a considerable contribution to the European chips ecosystem that we\u2019re building right now,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0ro6HEMLxFo&amp;ab_channel=IntelNewsroom\">commented<\/a> after the tech giant\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>The continent\u2019s weak position in the global semiconductor market was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brusselstimes.com\/292061\/chip-shortage-costs-european-car-industry-e100-billion\">especially evident during the pandemic<\/a>, demonstrating that chips are integral to the EU\u2019s digital and green transitions as well as its geopolitical agenda.
