Fall 2023. The first Developer Previews were released in February 2023, and beta updates are available starting in April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Google is already working on Android 14, the big version update for 2023. The yearly release cycle means there\u2019s always goodies on the horizon for Android users. Here\u2019s what we know.<br \/>\nAs crazy as it sounds, Android 14 is actually the 34th Android release. Some versions were decimal releases\u2014such as Android 8.1 Oreo\u2014that retained the name but bumped up the version number. That doesn\u2019t really h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en anymore\u2014with the exception of Android 12L\u2014especially after the switch away from dessert nicknames.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Is_Android_14s_Release_Date\"><\/span>When Is Android 14\u2019s Release Date?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Android 14 will follow a similar release schedule as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/345250\/whats-the-latest-version-of-android\/\">previous versions. Google doesn\u2019t share exact dates for releases, but we can expect releases in the following months:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>February<\/strong>: Android 14 Developer Preview 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>March<\/strong>: Android 14 Developer Preview 2<\/li>\n<li><strong>April<\/strong>: Android 14 Beta 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>May<\/strong>: Android 14 Beta 2<\/li>\n<li><strong>June<\/strong>: Android 14 Beta 3 (Platform Stability)<\/li>\n<li><strong>July<\/strong>: Android 14 Beta 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google did not share a month for when the final release will drop. However, we can look to previous versions to get an idea of when to expect it. Big Android version updates almost always happen in August, September, or October.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_New_in_Android_14\"><\/span>What\u2019s New in Android 14<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At the time of writing, Google hasn\u2019t revealed much about the consumer-facing changes in Android 14, but there are a couple of areas of focus, as well as some in-progress features to look forward to.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Satellite_Communication\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Satellite Communication<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/831178\/the-iphone-14-can-connect-to-satellites-heres-how-it-works\/\">iPhone 14 has an emergency satellite communication feature that allows you to literally connect to satellites when you have no Wi-Fi or data connection. Google\u2019s Hiroshi Lockheimer has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lockheimer\/status\/1565355464086265856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1565355464086265856%7Ctwgr%5E9d2f02ccd2d06fe7b6cfad0e9c6526346b2e3a48%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.androidpolice.com%2Fandroid-14%2F\">already confirmed<\/a> that Android will have the same technology in the next release, Android 14.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Splitting_the_Share_Menu_From_System_Updates\"><\/span>Splitting the Share Menu From System Updates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 523px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-877992\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Android-share-menu.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Android share menu\" width=\"523\" height=\"410\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Android Share Menu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Android share menu is one of the most complained-about areas of the operating system. It\u2019s the menu that appears when you want to share something from one app to another\u2014or to specific people. Currently, updating the share menu requires full system updates, but Android 14 might split it out into an independently updateable module. This would allow Google to update it more frequently and easily.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adapting_Apps_to_Different_Screen_Sizes\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_4\">Adapting Apps to Different Screen Sizes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>First and foremost, Google is continuing to work on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/764530\/android-12l-includes-a-taskbar-and-other-large-screen-tweaks\/\">making Android great for many different screen sizes. This has become important in the age of foldable devices with transforming screen sizes. Google updated its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/docs\/quality-guidelines\/tablet-app-quality\">large-screen app quality checklist<\/a>, making it easier for developers to see how their apps scale. They\u2019ve also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/large-screens\/gallery\">introduced new layouts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Regional_Preference_Settings\"><\/span>Regional Preference Settings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Android 13 introduced <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/827954\/how-to-change-language-for-individual-apps-on-android\/\">per-app language settings, and Android 14 appears to be taking that idea to other formats. A new \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xda-developers.com\/android-14-regional-preferences\/\">Regional Preferences<\/a>\u201d feature will allow you to set preferences for weather units, calendar format, and numbers. This way, for example, you won\u2019t need to tell a weather app you prefer Fahrenheit manually.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Better_Physical_Keyboard_and_Touchpad_Support\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_6\">Better Physical Keyboard and Touchpad Support<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-782977\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Android-Tablet-With-Mouse-and-Keyboard.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Android Tablet With Mouse and Keyboard\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Sydney Butler \/ How-To Geek<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking of screen sizes, Android 14 may include <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xda-developers.com\/android-14-improved-keyboard-support\/\">better support for using physical keyboards<\/a> with Android tablets. Google is preparing to add support for customizing modifier keys, including Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, Windows, etc. This would make keyboards a lot more useful with Android devices. There may also be more options for how touchpad gestures and scrolling should work.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pointing_Out_Bloatware\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_7\">Pointing Out Bloatware<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some Android devices come with an annoying amount of bloatware pre-installed. This can be anything from carrier apps to sponsored games. Android 14 may include a section in the Developer Options menu for uninstalling \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MishaalRahman\/status\/1590757745447571457\">Apps Installed in the Background<\/a>,\u201d which is the name of the feature. It\u2019s not yet clear if this will be for Android 14 or 15.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Predictive_Back_Gesture\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_8\">Predictive Back Gesture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"EU6gW2SSUvU\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/EU6gW2SSUvU\/hqdefault.jpg');\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Android\u2019s back gesture is not the greatest, especially since apps don\u2019t always make it clear where you\u2019ll be going when you use the gesture. To make this a little clearer, Android 14 will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xda-developers.com\/android-14-predictive-back-gesture\/\">show you a preview<\/a> of where you\u2019ll go when using the gesture. As you swipe in from the side of the display, you\u2019ll see a glimpse of the previous screen.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_Restrictive_App_Sideloading\"><\/span>More Restrictive App Sideloading<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/313433\/how-to-sideload-apps-on-android\/\">Sideloading is the act of installing an app from outside of the Play Store. It\u2019s remarkably easy to do\u2014even on Windows 11 and Amazon Fire tablets\u2014which makes it less secure than installing from an app store. Android 14 won\u2019t allow apps that target SDK version 23 (Android 6) or lower to be sideloaded.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Automatic_Dual_SIM_Switching\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_10\">Automatic Dual SIM Switching<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Currently, using dual SIMs in your phone is a bit of a pain. You have to manually switch SIMs if the primary SIM isn\u2019t getting good reception. A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/02\/08\/android-14-dual-sim-automatic\/\">new option in the SIM settings<\/a> aims to fix that. Users can toggle on \u201cSwitch Mobile Data Automatically,\u201d and Android will attempt to automatically switch between the SIMs based on cellular coverage. iPhones have had this feature for a few years.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"App_Cloning\"><\/span>App Cloning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cloning apps is something you\u2019ve <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/756816\/how-and-why-to-clone-apps-on-android\/\">needed a third-party app or Samsung phone for in the past. Android 14 may bring the feature officially to Android. A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/02\/08\/android-14-cloned-apps\/\">new \u201cCloned Apps\u201d menu<\/a> is present in the \u201cApps\u201d section. Not all apps will be available for cloning, as developers and manufacturers can choose to opt out of the feature.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Your_Android_Phone_as_a_Webcam\"><\/span>Use Your Android Phone as a Webcam<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Apple made it possible to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/842710\/how-to-use-your-iphone-as-a-webcam-with-continuity-camera\/\">use iPhones as webcams last year. Now, Google is looking to add the ability to Android devices as well. A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/android-review.googlesource.com\/c\/platform\/system\/sepolicy\/+\/2410788\">project in progress<\/a>\u00a0will allow you to plug and play an Android device as a \u201cUSB Video Class\u201d (UVC) webcam. This means it would work easily as a webcam on most devices rather than being locked to a system like Apple\u2019s method.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Passkey_Support_for_Apps\"><\/span>Passkey Support for Apps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/854319\/what-is-a-passkey\/\">Passkeys are shaping up to be the new way of signing into things on your phone. They replace passwords and PINs with more secure biometrics. Dashlane\u2014a popular password manager\u2014has already <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/3607085\/type\/am\/sid\/878300-xid-{xid}\/https:\/\/blog.dashlane.com\/dashlane-passkey-support-android\/&amp;___trxnet=cj\">announced<\/a> support for passkeys in Android 14. 1Password has also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/02\/09\/1password-passkey-2023\/\">announced<\/a> support for passkeys, and we should only see more in the future.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"iOS-Like_Photo_Permissions\"><\/span>iOS-Like Photo Permissions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The iPhone has a privacy option\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/691801\/all-the-new-iphone-privacy-features-in-ios-14\/\">introduced in iOS 14\u2014that allows you to give an app access to only select photos rather than all or nothing. Android 14 may <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xda-developers.com\/android-14-photo-picker-forced\/\">get a similar feature<\/a>. When an app requests access to media, you would be able to choose only the files you want to give, or allow the app to access all files. However, it stopped after Android 9 Pie in 2018.
