And many see Biden\u2019s reported considerations as mostly political.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden decided to back the\u00a0Republican\u00a0resolution on the D.C. crime bill after Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot failed to advance in a primary amid criticism over\u00a0her\u00a0record on crime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear that the administration will return to the Trump-era family detainee policy, but it is true that the GOP is working to portray Biden as weak at the border.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In both cases, the White House is seen as having political reasons to move toward the\u00a0middle\u00a0on the two issues, especially since it worked for him in 2020.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still a frustration to liberals who have nudged Biden to the left with some success. They want him to sustain what they see as progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Cohen, who co-founded the online activist network RootsAction, sees a disconnect between Biden and what liberals sometimes hope to see.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMany in the mainstream <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> and Democratic leadership want to portray President Biden as the second coming of FDR,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Organizers like himself\u00a0say\u00a0Biden\u00a0is\u00a0\u201cmostly unable or unwilling to utilize the presidential bully pulpit to mobilize the public toward a progressive and popular economic agenda,\u201d Cohen said, a concern that has been exasperated in recent weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Progressives have long irritated moderates over their stances on immigration and crime. The left wing was constantly attacked by Democrats after Republicans used the electorally charged slogan \u201cdefund the police\u201d against them.\u00a0But Biden\u00a0and his supporters appear to see benefits in taking\u00a0them on\u00a0over crime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFar left progressives launched \u2018defund the police\u2019 and \u2018abolish ICE\u2019 and mainstream Democrats have paid the price ever since,\u201d said Jim Kessler, who serves as executive vice president for policy for the centrist think tank Third Way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at recent elections in New York City, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Chicago Democratic voters have punished mayors and city councilmembers they\u2019ve deemed as unresponsive and overly progressive on crime,\u201d Kessler added.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Progressives argue Biden will be hurting himself if he does not nix the immigration policies that he and fellow Democrats widely criticized as inhumane during the Trump years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly urge the administration to reject this wrongheaded approach,\u201d Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Judy Chu (D-Calif.), and Nanette Barrag\u00e1n (D-Calif.) wrote in a statement issued after\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/06\/us\/politics\/biden-immigration-family-detention.html\">The New York Times<\/a>\u00a0reported that administration officials were contemplating a return to family detentions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The White House has not indicated whether they will move forward with the policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to go in on rumors that are out there or conversations that are happening at this time,\u201d White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this week. She added that \u201cno decisions have been made.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The sheer possibility,\u00a0however,\u00a0has progressives spooked. And it comes on the heels of what some believe was a misstep on the D.C. crime bill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moderates are looking to counter the GOP\u2019s crime attacks by showing areas controlled\u00a0by Republicans\u00a0where violent crime\u00a0is on\u00a0the rise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to data analyzed by Third Way, the murder rate in the \u201c25 states that voted for Donald Trump has exceeded the murder rate in the 25 states that voted for Joe Biden in every year from 2000 to 2020.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On other issues, progressives say Biden has done a lot right. They have hailed his\u00a0support for Social Security and Medicare and believe some of the\u00a0party\u2019s legislative accomplishments on things like climate and health care are significant.\u00a0They think they played a role in those wins, even as they acknowledge they would have gone farther if they had been able.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, as Biden prepares to announce his reelection bid, the fissures within the party are becoming more apparent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Liberal lawmakers who usually praise the president have been more outspoken, and activists from various interest groups have been quick to offer their organizing support. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) used the term \u201cenraged\u201d in reference to the new migrant border discussion, while other House progressives offered equally strong sentiments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moderates suggest the president is showing signs of being ready for primetime, when the battle for the White House will be filled with GOP\u00a0criticisms\u00a0on the controversial topics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than being upset that centrist Joe Biden is governing like a centrist, progressives should ask themselves why they are losing so much support in the urban communities they consider their base,\u201d said Kessler. \u201cBiden is where the American people are on both issues and he\u2019s reflecting where most Democrats are as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
