Over the course of his career, Nicolas Cage<\/strong> has played an angel, a con man, a thief, a treasure hunter, an animated mole, a sorcerer, a knight, and a black-and-white version of Spider-Man, just to name a few. Now he\u2019s finally adding \u201cdragon\u201d to his resume.<\/p>\n

The famously eccentric actor will star in an executive produce Highfire<\/strong><\/em>, Amazon\u2019s adaptation of Artemis Fowl<\/em> author Eoin Colfer\u2019s fantasy novel. Cage will voice a vodka-loving dragon who was once a fearsome force to be reckoned with, but who now spends his days drinking and binge-watching Netflix. Dear Amazon: I\u2019d like to see this show immedia<\/a>tely, please.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deadline has the news<\/a> about Hellfire<\/em>, a Nicolas Cage dragon show that\u2019s being adapted by Davey Holmes<\/strong>, the guy behind Epix\u2019s television adaptation of Get Shorty<\/em>. Described as \u201ca gritty crime-thriller with doses of magical realism,\u201d the show centers on a dragon named Wyvern,\u00a0Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie\u2026who now just goes by the name \u201cVern\u201d and spends his time hiding out in the bayous of Louisiana drinking, wearing a Flashdance<\/em> T-shirt, lighting cigarettes with his nose sparks, and binging Netflix in his La-Z-Boy recliner. But \u201cwhen Vern\u2019s world collides with a human teen named Squib, who becomes mixed up in some trouble while running booze for the local mob, their mutual struggle for survival becomes entangled in the most unlikely of friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is an absolutely\u00a0incredible<\/em> premise, and the idea of bringing Cage on board to voice this dragon is particularly inspired, because everyone who loves his body of work for its sheer insanity will likely be on board to see him do something like this that he\u2019s never done before. While the most recent adaptation of Colfer\u2019s work was a creative disaster \u2013 the\u00a0Artemis Fowl<\/em> movie\u00a0was dumped on Disney and ultimately spared the embarrassment of publicly eating shit with a theatrical release \u2013 I have to hope that this series<\/a> will end up being better.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Cage will soon be playing Tiger King<\/em>\u2018s Joe Exotic in a new series, a janitor who battles possessed animatronic characters in a horror film called\u00a0Wally\u2019s Wonderland<\/em>, and a heightened version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent<\/em> opposite The Mandalorian<\/em> actor Pedro Pascal.<\/p>\n
