A fourth site that was proposed to be deferred until a later date is now expected to be rejected, a source said. As many as five drill sites were considered for the project.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/12\/climate\/biden-willow-arctic-drilling-restrictions.html?smid=tw-share\">The New York Times<\/a>\u00a0first reported that the approval would come Monday and would be reduced to three drill sites.<\/p>\n<p>Asked for comment, a White House spokesperson referred The Hill to a Friday statement from the administration that a decision had not yet been made.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo final decisions have been made \u2013 anyone who says there has been a final decision is wrong,\u201d Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a written statement on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Willow Project has faced significant opposition from the left and an approval would anger some members of President Biden\u2019s base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposal document said that the project could ultimately result in a total of 278,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions\u00a0 \u2014 equivalent to driving\u00a059,900 cars for a year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On Sunday night, the Biden administration announced certain steps aimed at limiting other oil and gas drilling in and around Alaska, though the moves are not expected to appease the project\u2019s critics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the Willow Project say that it will bring economic benefits to the region and increase oil supplies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Willow Project was initially approved by the Trump administration in 2020, but the approval was struck down in court in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Judge Sharon Gleason said at the time that the environmental review that the government undertook for the project was inadequate, including the assessment of the project\u2019s climate impacts.
