It is the largest single project currently proposed on federal lands,\u201d said Ann Alexander, a senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council, ahead of the project\u2019s approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The final project includes three drill sites, rejecting a fourth site that would have been included but deferred in the department\u2019s proposed approval last month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The change is expected to result in about 6 percent less total oil production than last month\u2019s proposal would have resulted in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the decision on Sunday, the Biden administration announced some restrictions on other oil exploration in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the Interior Department issued a statement describing its action as \u201csubstantially reducing\u201d the size of the project from the five drill sites that had been approved under the previous administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>After the Willow Project was approved by the Trump administration in 2020, a judge later sent it back to the Biden administration for further consideration, deciding that a Trump-era environmental review was inadequate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The department also said that ConocoPhillips was giving up 68,000 acres of existing oil and gas leases, including leases in an area known as the\u00a0Teshekpuk Lake Special Area that is home to wildlife like caribou.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless,\u00a0the approval spurred ire from the left.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden\u2019s decision to move forward with the Willow Project abandons the millions of young people who overwhelmingly came together to demand he stop the project and protect our futures,\u201d Sunrise Movement Executive Director Varshini Prakash said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of sticking to his own goals and listening to the millions of young people who carried the party for the last three cycles, President Biden is letting the fossil fuel industry have their way,\u201d Prakash said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few weeks, the project has spurred activism,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/05\/us\/willow-project-tiktok-petition-movement-climate\/index.html\">particularly online,<\/a>\u00a0from opponents, who argue that it would be a disaster for climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And it comes after Biden also came out against local D.C. regulation that would have decreased penalties for crimes like carjackings and robberies, also alienating left-wing allies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the Willow Project has been a big priority for Alaska\u2019s congressional delegation, who argue that it will bring economic benefits to the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWillow is finally reapproved, and we can almost literally feel Alaska\u2019s future brightening because of it. After years of relentless advocacy, we are now on the cusp of creating thousands of new jobs, generating billions of dollars in new revenues, improving quality of life on the North Slope and across our state, and adding vital energy to TAPS to fuel the nation and the world,\u201d Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said in a written statement.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>ConocoPhillips, meanwhile, said in a statement that it was prepared to begin construction \u201cim<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the right decision for Alaska and our nation,\u201d said Ryan Lance, ConocoPhillips chairman and chief executive officer, in a written statement.<\/p>\n<p><em>Updated at 11:02 a.m. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
