(AP) \u2014 Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is proposing changes to entitlement programs for younger generations, opening the door to potential cuts to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security and Medicare if elected.<\/p>\n<p>At a campaign rally Monday night in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Haley promised not to touch the benefits of older people who retired with certain guarantees of a financial future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not taking it from seniors,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe\u2019re not taking it to anyone who\u2019s been promised anything. My parents are in their 80s. I don\u2019t want anybody touching theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Haley, making her first campaign stop in South Carolina since launching her campaign last month, said her children, both of whom are in their 20s, are part of the generation for whom the benefits should be altered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the ones we tell the rules have changed \u2014 anyone new coming in this system,\u201d said Haley, a former South Carolina governor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. \u201cThat\u2019s how you do entitlement reform. You let them know, it\u2019s not going to be there for you anyway, because Social Security goes bankrupt in 10 years, Medicare goes bankrupt in five. We have to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most leading Republicans have recently sought to signal their unwillingness to touch entitlement programs, though the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-politics-us-republican-party-united-states-government-programs-00e9f526a93936c324a40d71df2863ba\" data-ylk=\"slk:GOP has a long history;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">GOP has a long history<\/a> of threatening to slash the benefits. Rick Scott of Florida, introduced last year, that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-florida-donald-trump-congress-f4ebd06cdf19e45dfd90eb3135004770\" data-ylk=\"slk:called for all federal spending legislation to sunset;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">called for all federal spending legislation to sunset<\/a> in five years, subject to votes in Congress that could preserve programs. After Biden&#8217;s speech, Scott amended the plan to exempt Social Security, Medicare, national security, veterans benefits, and other essential services.<\/p>\n<p>The programs are coming up against insolvency deadlines. Forecasters say Social Security won\u2019t be able to pay out its promised benefits in about a dozen years, and Medicare won\u2019t be able to do so in just five years. Economists say both programs will drive the national debt higher in the decades to come, forcing teeth-gritting choices for the next generation of lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Others in the presidential field have taken the issue head on. On Monday in Davenport, Iowa, former President Donald Trump pledged to keep the programs as they are. \u201cI will not be cutting Medicare, and I will not be cutting Social Security,&#8221; he declared.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Sunday on Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>, Haley proposed elevating the retirement age \u201cso that it matches life expectancy,\u201d an idea she has mentioned during other campaign stops without delineating a specific age.<\/p>\n<p>To Haley, entitlement reform should also include a move \u201cto limit the benefits for the wealthy,&#8221; as well as an expansion of Medicare Advantage, in which private companies offer plans that are reimbursed by the government for care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s create the competition,\u201d Haley said. &#8220;There are great programs \u2014 it will cause health care costs to go down. That\u2019s how you deal with the budget. That\u2019s what we\u2019ll do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the age limits, as well as the proposals for wealthier Americans, Haley has not specified details on what she has in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Since opening her campaign Feb. 15, Haley has made stops in Iowa and New Hampshire, given speeches at the Conservative Political Action Conference and Americans for Prosperity gatherings and raised money in New York \u2014 although the campaign has said it won&#8217;t release fundraising figures until the end of the first quarter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
