“#Nets, Liberty and St. John\u2019s start law course for HS students<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n All throughout the NBA restart in Orlando \u2014 both before and after this week\u2019s boycotts \u2014 player leaders from LeBron James to Garrett Temple warned that real change isn\u2019t enacted by mere talk, but by action.<\/p>\n

For players, action meant boycotting playoff game<\/a>s in response to a police officer shooting another unarmed black man, Jacob Blake. For the Nets and Liberty, it has meant backing up their words not only with their wealth but their work.<\/p>\n

Even before team owners Joe and Clara Wu Tsai vowed $50 million to social<\/a> justice causes, parent company BSE Global partnered with St. John\u2019s School of Law on a program for underserved high school students, teaching about civil rights and sports law to show minority youth there\u2019s actually a path for them through law.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy intent \u2014 and it\u2019s been the intent of the Long Island Nets \u2014 was how do we make an impact in the community? How do we become a community asset? \u2026 It\u2019s something I thought would have sustainability for years to come,\u201d said Alton Byrd, the G-League Long Island Nets\u2019 vice president of business operations. \u201cThis is a way to really get folks educated about the challenges we face as a race of people, as a country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only 5 percent of lawyers in the U.S. are black, a similar amount Latino. Hence the summer program.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s how we get people more educated about the law and civil rights at a young age, where they can really get in with hands and feet and ask questions, challenge each other and challenge us,\u201d Byrd told The Post. \u201cThey learn about life, about liberty \u2014 or lack thereof \u2014 and about how to build a potential career around it.\u201d<\/p>\n

What started as a small two-week program this month will grow in the future, in terms of length, students and scope.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought let\u2019s provide something virtual but meaningful,\u201d said St. John\u2019s law professor Elaine M. Chiu. \u201cThat was the genesis: Saving kids\u2019 COVID summers, and getting to do innovative substantive stuff we\u2019d been thinking about already.\u201d <\/p>\n

Kamille Dean \u2014 St. John\u2019s School of Law\u2019s director of diversity and inclusion \u2014 and her husband are Long Island Nets season-ticket holders. She spoke with Byrd at a game in February, pitching a sports mock law program for high school students.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a crisis when we talk about African Americans in particular entering law school,\u201d Dean told The Post. \u201cWe\u2019re not seeing numbers equivalent to the African-American population matriculate into law school. There are lots of reasons why: Some of its gatekeeping, and some is systemic racism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a serious problem when we talk about injustice in the criminal justice system that happ<\/a>ens to disproportionately burden African-American families, and in particular black men. \u2026 This is part of expanding the pipeline to make sure we\u2019re not losing talented young people, but keeping an eye out for the black men in particular that we\u2019re losing to the school-to-prison pipeline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students were paired with BSE Global staff as mentors, and got hours of virtual visits from sports and social justice law practitioners such as American University law professor Jeremi Duru and Stanford law professor Robert Weisberg, BSE\u2019s chief legal officer Jeff Gewirtz and Nets assistant general<\/a> counsel Russell Yavner.<\/p>\n

But it was the Zoom guest on the program\u2019s final day that had the students buzzing. Temple \u2014 who started the entire playoff series<\/a> versus Toronto, donning Education Reform on his jersey \u2014 is studying for the LSAT with an eye toward law school.<\/p>\n

And after Temple spoke about the wealth gap \u2014 black families having just one-tenth the net wealth white families enjoy, according to the U.S. Federal Reserve \u2014 one student said he was inspired to attend law school.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the country we live in \u2014 the world we live in \u2014 we need to see as many diverse faces in the judicial process as we can to help change the marginalization of people that look like us in this country,\u201d Temple told the students. \u201cThe Black Lives Matter movement has been amazing, but this started far before Trayvon Martin\u2019s tragic death, Eric Garner\u2019s tragic death.\u201d<\/p>\n

And George Floyd\u2019s. And Breonna Taylor\u2019s. And now Blake, who is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot seven times in the back.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019m doing right now is a long-term play,\u201d Temple said. \u201cUnfortunately the things we want to see changed policy-wise, some of them are long-term plays.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
