Ron DeSantis on Tuesday over his remarks that defending Ukraine against Russian aggression wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;vital&#8221; U.S. interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI completely disagree with his comments,\u201d said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">About a half-dozen of Wicker&#8217;s GOP colleagues voiced varying degrees of opposition to DeSantis&#8217; remarks Monday night on Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The high-profile comments by DeSantis, a potential 2024 presidential hopeful who many GOP elites expect to be the main alternative to former President Donald Trump, intensify a clash within the party between security hawks who want to preserve the post-World War II order and a right-wing populist wing seeking to pull back from global affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., told NBC News: \u201cI\u2019d certainly hate to send a signal to [Russian President] Vladimir Putin that we\u2019re not concerned about him, and I\u2019d certainly hate to send a signal to other allies around the world that you\u2019re on your own. Because that could lead to a nuclear proliferation that we\u2019ve been avoiding for decades. So no, I do think it\u2019s in our interest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cramer, who otherwise praised DeSantis, said he\u2019s \u201cnot super surprised\u201d by the remarks, as DeSantis is navigating a complicated dynamic with the party base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe have a base that\u2019s restless, and if he\u2019s running for president, he probably needs to speak to that base a little bit,&#8221; Cramer said. &#8220;And that\u2019s not to say it\u2019s not his position, but I do think if he is the president of the United States and he has all that power, then hopefully he\u2019s adequately briefed on the details to make the decision. But I also hope that this position evolves a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., the ranking member of the Intelligence Committee, rejected DeSantis\u2019 view that Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine was a \u201cterritorial dispute\u201d between two sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a territorial dispute in the sense that \u2014 any more than it would be a territorial dispute if the United States decided that it wanted to invade Canada or take over the Bahamas,\u201d Rubio told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. \u201cJust because someone claims something doesn\u2019t mean it belongs to them. This is an invasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Rubio added: &#8220;I don\u2019t know what he\u2019s trying to do or what the goal is. Obviously, he doesn\u2019t deal with foreign policy every day as governor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"> Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said DeSantis\u2019 comments reflected a \u201cmisunderstanding of the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis is not a territorial conflict. This is a war of aggression,&#8221; he said, adding that DeSantis has been &#8220;a great governor, but in my opinion, if you don\u2019t get Ukraine right, this is a chance to stop Putin before it gets to be a bigger war \u2014 and China\u2019s watching.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., said\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0have a different view on that than he does\u201d when he was pressed about DeSantis. \u201cThere\u2019s a diversity of opinion, as you know, within members of our party.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Numerous Republicans said protecting Ukraine was ultimately about protecting the U.S. and its allies in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey\u2019re a vital interest,\u201d said Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala. \u201cWe\u2019re basically protecting NATO and Europe.\u201d But he said there\u2019s a valid debate about how far the U.S. can go in terms of helping Ukraine. \u201cWe\u2019re broke,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to have a better plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said: \u201cI don\u2019t want America to be the world\u2019s policeman, but I don\u2019t want Vladimir Putin or [Chinese President] Xi Jinping to be the world\u2019s policemen, either. I\u2019ve never looked at our Ukraine assistance as charity. I\u2019ve looked at it as self-preservation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Other Republicans said the issue will spark a debate in the primaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s something that I think any one of the individuals who has an interest in working as the next president of the United States really needs to get a full briefing before they decide to make up their minds on this particular issue,\u201d Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., told reporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmark\">\u201cSo we\u2019ll see how it moves.
