Mitt Romney (R-Utah) grilled Shalanda Young, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), about <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.budget.senate.gov\/hearings\/the-presidents-fiscal-year-2024-budget-proposal\">during a hearing Wednesday<\/a> focused on President Biden\u2019s fiscal 2024 budget proposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a tense line of questioning, Romney pressed Young about whether she knew of any cuts to the program proposed by lawmakers. Biden has accused Republicans of trying to cut benefits.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve heard of proposals from a current senator or congressman currently proposing to cut benefits to Social Security?\u201d Romney repeatedly asked Young during the hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. Have they changed their position? Maybe, but yes. Members who are current\u2014\u201d Young began, before Romney doubled down, asking if any lawmakers has proposed cuts \u201cin the last several months or the last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young responded that \u201ccurrent members have well-known policies out there to cut Social Security and Medicare,\u201d to which Romney argued, \u201cThat is simply wrong, and it\u2019s not honest to say that to members of Congress. That is simply wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romney then asked Young if she recognized that the program\u2019s trust fund is projected to \u201crun out\u201d in roughly the next decade, noting estimates that \u201cbenefits would be cut dramatically, like 25 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a report released by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) last month, Social Security\u2019s funds are projected to run a shortfall in 2032, sooner than previously expected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBO Director Phillip Swagel also said then that benefits \u201cwould be more than 20 percent smaller than scheduled, if outlays are limited to what is payable after this trust fund exhaustion.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m aware,\u201d Young said, acknowledging the funding threat as a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, why is it then that in the president\u2019s budget there\u2019s no effort to address that whatsoever?\u201d Romney asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we clearly disagree on this, there are some who have policies on websites \u2014 I\u2019m h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y to print them and send them to the committee \u2014 whether they have changed our position, is another thing \u2014 who want to cut\u2013\u201d Young began.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry, you\u2019ve got to answer the question, as opposed to [changing] the topic,\u201d Romney said, as the two proceeded to go back and forth for a moment. \u201cI asked a question, why does the president\u2019s budget not lay out how you would protect Social Security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nobody in this committee that wants to cut it,\u201d Romney said. \u201cI know of no Republican or Democrat in the House or the Senate who is proposing cutting Social Security benefits, and it\u2019s dishonest to keep saying it. It\u2019s offensive and dishonest and not realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis president believes the biggest threat to Social Security are those who want to cut it,\u201d Young said moments later. \u201cHis budget says no.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The heated exchange comes as the fate of Social Security has come to the forefront on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers are feuding about budget cuts as part of a deal to raise the debt limit, which must be done in the next several months.<\/p>\n<p>While Democrats have pushed for the roughly $31.4 million threshold to be upped without conditions, Republicans say the action must be paired with steep spending cuts, as some have also pushed for proposals aimed at balancing the federal budget in 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, GOP leadership has doubled down on vows not to link changes to Social Security to the debt fight, after some members floated linking potential entitlement reforms to a debt limit deal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.bgov.com\/news\/entitlement-spending-cap-plans-linked-by-gop-to-debt-limit-deal\/\">late last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Republican Study Committee, the biggest conservative caucus in the lower chamber, has also received attention for proposals to tighten the eligibility age for Social Security and Medicare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there is partisan divide over whether such proposals to raise the age threshold would classify as a \u201ccut.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
