The mobile carrier is now being acquired by T-Mobile.<\/p>\n<p>T-Mobile announced its purchase of Ka\u2019ena Corporation, which in turn owns\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mint-mobile.58dp.net\/c\/156932\/978658\/7915?subId1=htg&amp;subId2=879417&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mintmobile.com%2F&amp;subid3=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=ir\">Mint Mobile<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ultramobile.com%2F&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Ultra Mobile<\/a> (another MVNO that specializes in international calling), and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plum.mobi\/\">Plum<\/a> (a wholesale MVNO). T-Mobile isn\u2019t disclosing how many subscribers each carrier has, but the number is almost certainly high \u2014 Mint has consistently been one of the most-recommended options for budget phone plans, including in our own best cell phone plan roundup. Mint has also gained some notoriety since 2019 for being <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/ryan-reynolds-now-owns-mint-mobile\/\">partially owned by actor Ryan Reynolds<\/a>, who has helped market the carrier in many <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2TPt2pTws1k\">advertisements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>T-Mobile says it \u201chelp the brands to grow and\u00a0offer competitive pricing and greater device inventory to more U.S. consumers seeking value offerings.\u201d Mint Mobile founders\u00a0David Glickman and\u202fRizwan Kassim will continue to manage the brands at T-Mobile, while\u00a0Ryan Reynolds will work for Mint in a \u201ccreative role.\u201d T-Mobile is paying up to $1.35 billion, depending on how much money Ka\u2019ena is making by the time the deal closes later this year.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear what changes are in store for Mint after the acquisition is complete. One of Mint\u2019s founders <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/mintmobile\/comments\/11rw5qv\/comment\/jcaihkd\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web2x&amp;context=3\">said on Reddit<\/a> that there are no plans to change Mint\u2019s plan prices, but plans can change, or Mint\u2019s service could become worse in some other way. T-Mobile has raised its prices less frequently in recent history than AT&amp;T and Verizon, but it has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-26\/t-mobile-raised-fees-then-scolded-peers-for-jacked-up-prices?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">used hidden fees to generate more revenue<\/a>. T-Mobile <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-sprint-m-a-tmobile-idUSKCN1PT2DF\">promised<\/a> not to raise prices on plans for three years if its purchase of Sprint went through, which was completed in April 2020\u2026 almost three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The purchase comes as T-Mobile is still dealing with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/20\/23563825\/tmobile-data-breach-api-customer-accounts-hacker-security\">repeated<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/22\/business\/t-mobile-hacking-settlement.html\">security breaches<\/a>, which have led to the personal information of millions of customers being stolen. Mint already had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/mint-mobile-hit-by-a-data-breach-after-numbers-ported-data-accessed\/\">a significant data breach in 2021<\/a>, and future T-Mobile security breaches could affect Mint subscribers.
