Bill Cassidy (R-La.) abruptly cut off Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen at a hearing Thursday and declared, \u201cThat\u2019s a lie,\u201d when Yellen said that President Biden is ready to work with Congress on reforming <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat, doesn\u2019t the president care?\u201d Cassidy asked during a Senate Finance Committee hearing on Biden\u2019s budget. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe cares very deeply,\u201d Yellen answered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where is his plan?\u201d Cassidy interjected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stands ready to work with Congress\u2026\u201d Yellen began answering when Cassidy cut her off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lie,\u201d Cassidy exclaimed. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when a bipartisan group of senators has repeatedly requested to meet with him about Social [Security] so that someone who is a current beneficiary will not see her benefits cut by 24 percent, we have not heard anything on our request,\u201d Cassidy said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That heated interaction prompted Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) to step in and admonish Cassidy for breaching Senate decorum. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI would just caution colleagues, we\u2019ve got plenty of differences around here but accusing witnesses of lying is over the line,\u201d Wyden said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy softened a bit and explained that he wasn\u2019t accusing Yellen of lying but repeating a talking point that didn\u2019t match reality. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI accept that, and I did not mean that for the Madam Secretary who is merely saying that which she\u2019s been told, I\u2019m saying it for an empiric observation \u2014 when the president says he\u2019s ready to meet, then he\u2019s turned down\u2026\u201d the Louisiana senator started to explain before Wyden cut him off. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe time of the gentlemen is expired. Accusing witnesses of lying is over the line,\u201d Wyden repeated tersely. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy later insisted to reporters that he did not call Yellen a liar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t call her a liar. She\u2019s got talking points. She was told that the president has said that. Just because she\u2019s reporting what she was told the president said, that\u2019s not making me call her a liar,\u201d Cassidy. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhoever gave that talking point either doesn\u2019t know that there\u2019s been multiple attempts to speak to [Biden,] or knows it and decided it\u2019s better pub[licity] to say something different,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he expected the hearing to be so tense, Cassidy pointed out that Biden has called for nearly $5 trillion in tax increases without proposing \u201ca dime\u201d in new funding for Social Security, referring to the budget plan the White House sent to Congress last week. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
