\n Calling it a breeding ground for COVID-19, staff and students have launched a petition to demand the city close the Martin Luther King High School building in Midtown \u2014 site of the infamous toilet-paper test.<\/p>\n

Ventilation in the building \u2014 where no classrooms have windows \u2014 is so bad that teachers bring their own air purifiers to cope with stifling conditions<\/p>\n

Rodent and cockroach infestation in the ceilings make it worse, a teacher told The Post: \u201cIt gets in the air and makes it hard to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no windows and a faulty HVAC system that\u2019s been in place since 1970. It will not prevent the spread of COVID-19 to students and staff in the building,\u201d says the Change.org petition, which had more than 525 signatures Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo the right thing! We are not guinea pigs!\u201d wrote a\u00a0 staffer who signed it.<\/p>\n

The building, on Amsterdam Avenue near Lincoln Center and next to famed LaGuardia HS Of Music & Art and Performing Arts, houses six small high schools.<\/p>\n

Room 440 was seen in a leaked video last week showing Department of Education workers lifting pieces of toilet paper on sticks to the drop ceiling. Officials called it a common airflow test cited by the CDC. The \u201ctissue test\u201d is being used in walkthroughs of city schools to decide if they\u2019re safe to open on Sept. 10.<\/p>\n

Corey Metzger, a school expert on the epidemic task force of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, said the crude test could be useful to quickly identify trouble spots, but only as a first step.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertainly, if you\u2019re trying to\u00a0 get accurate measures, there are other\u00a0 tools you would use,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The DOE said inspectors in Room 440 \u201cdetermined that the exhaust fan was not operational and it is being fixed,\u201d adding the room would not be used until then.<\/p>\n

But staffers contend MLK\u2019s\u00a0 ventilation problems are far more extensive.<\/p>\n

Whether the A\/C or the heater is on, \u201cair isn\u2019t moving,\u201d a teacher said. In the basement classrooms, students sit near the boilers \u2014 \u201cthey\u2019re kind of baking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be a massive amount of work that must be done to make this building safe during this pandemic,\u201d a staffer wrote on the petition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am signing because I am scared for the safety of myself, my coworkers and students,\u201d another wrote,\u00a0 citing a 2018-19 DOE inspection report that cited multiple \u201cdefective\u201d ventilation parts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the flu, and a simple cold spreads like wildfire in our school with no windows, and without the proper ventilation what do you think will happ<\/a>en with Covid even with the masks worn?\u201d another wrote.<\/p>\n

DOE spokesman Nathaniel Styer did not comment on the MLK petition, but said in a statement, \u201cWe pledged that our classrooms will be safe or they will not be used \u2013 period. We\u2019ve been doing this work for months, identifying and repairing issues and getting our schools ready to reopen.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
