Here\u2019s how to ensure you\u2019re getting the most for your money.<\/p>\n<p>The seasonal Steam sales\u2014especially the big Summer Sale\u2014have been a great way to save money on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2F&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Steam<\/a> games since they were introduced over a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>But just like when you\u2019re looking at a markdown price tag at your local department store, sometimes what looks like a great sale isn\u2019t always a great sale\u2014or even a sale at all. Let\u2019s look at some simple strategies to ensure you\u2019re not wasting your money.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Your_Wishlist_Liberally\"><\/span>Use Your Wishlist Liberally<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lots of different retailers have wishlist functions and you might have gotten used to ignoring them. Steam\u2019s wishlist function is actually pretty useful, however.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just a place to park things and forget about them, Steam actively monitors the list and fires off an email when games on your wishlist go on sale.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly useful because it\u2019s not dependent on big sales, the wishlist notification will trigger for any discount, not just when a game is discounted for the Summer Sale or such. When Double Fine Productions released <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2Fapp%2F607080%2FPsychonauts_2%2F&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\"><em>Psychonauts 2<\/em><\/a> in August of 2021, for example, the developer deeply discounted the original <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2Fapp%2F3830%2FPsychonauts%2F%3Fcurator_clanid%3D41076690&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\"><em>Psychonauts<\/em><\/a> as part of a new-release promotion\u2014but independent of any major sale.<\/p>\n<p>The default Steam list doesn\u2019t track prices\u2014it won\u2019t tell you that something is one sale right now but it was on a better sale three months ago\u2014but it\u2019s first-party and the most reliable way to get notified when a game you\u2019re interested in on Steam is on sale.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pay_Attention_to_Publisher_Sales_and_Bundles\"><\/span>Pay Attention to Publisher Sales and Bundles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The nod to <em>Psychonauts<\/em> is a good place to point out the money-saving power of publisher sales and bundles.<\/p>\n<p>Publisher sales are when a publisher discounts games across its entire catalog or, more frequently, across an entire franchise. If you\u2019re looking at a sale list and <em>Fallout 4<\/em> is on sale, for instance, there is a good chance that all the other games in the <em>Fallout<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> are on sale too.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Steam also has bundle discounts that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly, in most cases, even if you own games in the bundle. So let\u2019s say you already own <em>Fallout 4<\/em> but see there is a big <em>Fallout<\/em> bundle that includes <em>Fallout 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, that might not have been a wise purchase because, in the past, Steam bundles didn\u2019t play nice with your existing library. Now, however, you can purchase a bundle with the included discount minus the cost of the game you already own.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of publishers releasing bundles that include all the games in the franchise, you can make out like a bandit if you\u2019ve already purchased the most expensive flagship AAA title. You can often scoop up the entire back catalog of a given franchise for a few dollars because the discount is so great and you\u2019re not buying the newest and most expensive title. It also shows you the price across multiple other popular game stores and offers a range of tools to help you keep an eye on potential purchases. You can set build collections, set price alerts, and quickly compare prices between Steam and dozens of other stores.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Purchase_From_Third-Party_Stores\"><\/span>Purchase From Third-Party Stores<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In addition to watching actual on-Steam sale prices directly or with third-party tools, you can also simply purchase the game from a third-party website.<\/p>\n<p>If you want the Steam experience (full integration with the launcher and friend list, achievements, etc.) then you\u2019ll want to purchase an actual Steam key you can import into Steam. If you already own the game on Steam, it\u2019s obvious. When you go to purchase it again, you\u2019ll see you own it.<\/p>\n<p>But with the proliferation of game platforms and the huge number of game giveaways, it\u2019s unbelievably easy to get a free game and forget all about it. Since it launched, for instance, Epic Games has given away hundreds of free games\u2014and that\u2019s just one of the many places you can score free games. Add in Prime Gaming, a subscription to Humble Choice, and the free and discounted games just pile up.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind it\u2019s unbelievably easy to find yourself in a situation where you claimed a free game on Epic Games, or elsewhere, a year or more ago and then you see the same game on sale on Steam and think \u201cWow, I remember I wanted to play that game!\u201d only to purchase it despite already owning it. (If that sounds 100% autobiographical, I assure you it is.)<\/p>\n<p>While you can search your email for transaction receipts (even \u201cfree\u201d games come with email confirmations in most digital stores) it\u2019s way more efficient to take advantage of the cross-store game organizer Playnite.
