\n Five daily classroom \u201cmask breaks\u201d are among the new COVID rules and rituals greeting students and teachers at a Bronx elementary school.<\/p>\n

There will also be timed hand-washing, scheduled restroom visits, and students eating lunch at their desks without looking at the teacher giving a lesson.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were told the teachers would be standing the back of the room, and the kids facing forward,\u201d a teacher told The Post, saying this is meant to prevent spreading the virus.<\/p>\n

Like all city schools planning to reopen Sept. 10,\u00a0 PS 333, the Longwood Academy of Discovery, is scrambling to come with routines and protocols that follow Department of Education guidelines.<\/p>\n

Under DOE rules, everyone must wear masks in the classroom.<\/p>\n

But according to the list of\u00a0 \u201cdaily rituals\u201d Principal Victoria Najera gave teachers:\u00a0 \u201cA minimum of five mask breaks must occur in the classroom.\u201d The teacher decides when to give the mask breaks.<\/p>\n

The city Department of Education encourages mask breaks, especially for younger children, but it says they should occur only \u201cin a well ventilated space\u201d or outdoors with students social<\/a>ly distanced six feet apart. And teachers must keep their own masks on even outside.<\/p>\n

The DOE does not recommend a specific number of mask breaks. \u201cWe encourage elementary schools to work mask breaks into their programming where app<\/a>ropriate,\u201d said spokesman Nathaniel Styer.<\/p>\n

Some teachers think it\u2019s not a good idea to give so many breaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cLetting them take it on and off all day long is going to encourage them to not take it seriously,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n

If kids refuse to wear their masks, they will be taken to a \u201cSAVE\u201d room, used for disruptive children, where staff will try to persuade them to cooperate. If they don\u2019t, the school will call their parents.<\/p>\n

Other \u201cdaily rituals\u201d include:<\/p>\n

\u2013A\u00a0 \u2018\u2019scheduled time for hand washing\u201d in the restroom if the room does not have a sink. Or kids can just use hand sanitizer.<\/p>\n

\u2013A \u201cbathrooming\u201d schedule to avoid overcrowding.<\/p>\n

\u2013A 15-minute stretch break in the yard \u2014 while maintaining social distancing.<\/p>\n

Between all that, teachers have to conduct a jam-packed set of lessons, even during lunch. For grades K-2, that includes blocks of phonics, reading, writing and math.<\/p>\n

The 625-student school will be broken into three groups for blended learning \u2014 a mix of in-person and remote \u2014 and a fourth for kids in fully remote classes.\u00a0 The blended kids will come to school a total five days every three weeks, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

The principal asks parents to take\u00a0 their children\u2019s temperature in the morning, keep them home with a temperature higher than 100 degrees, and pick them up \u201casap\u201d if their kids get sick at school.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your child is sick with COVID,\u201d she adds, \u201cthey must stay home for 14 days and may only return when provided a letter from the doctor.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
