Speaking with The Hill on Sunday, Cardona said that while he doesn\u2019t \u201chave a particular statement around charter schools,\u201d he emphasized: \u201cI love what \u2018Abbott Elementary\u2019 has done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I want to see an episode about how some states are trying to privatize schools. That\u2019s the episode that I would want to be \u2014 have them hone in on because I think that\u2019s an issue that we really should be worried about,\u201d Cardona said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And the plot line has not gone without notice from education advocates and the larger public, including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/how-abbott-elementary-takes-on-the-charter-school-movement\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/how-abbott-elementary-takes-on-the-charter-school-movement\">a glowing essay in The New Yorker<\/a> on Thursday that called it \u201can artful, sustained, and hilarious polemic against the privatization of public schools,\u201d though the story has also drawn considerable pushback from supporters of the charter movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe obviously don\u2019t like charter schools being vilified or mischaracterized, and no one likes being vilified or mischaracterized,\u201d Debbie Veney, a senior vice president at the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, said in an interview with The Hill. \u201cHowever, we try to take it with somewhat of a grain of salt, because it is a comedy, and there is hyperbole and exaggeration built into the device of satire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Veney added that \u201cone thing that really stood out to me and kind of made me feel a little bit better\u201d was the show\u2019s depiction of how the head of Legendary Schools, played by Leslie Odom Jr., was \u201cinspired by the great education\u201d he received as a child, including from one Abbott teacher who particularly touched him.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe was inspired by her in the way that she loved and cared for him and educated him to come back to his hometown and to create schools that really mirrored that type of experience that he got, and he will not settle for things that give kids less of an opportunity than they deserve,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Not all charter school advocates, however, are taking the story line in stride.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pathetic when fewer than 20% of Philadelphia students can even read, write or spell at grade level that there\u2019s a show on television that has the nerve to criticize the schools that succeed, and the people that help them,\u201d Jeanne Allen, founder and CEO of the Center for Education Reform, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeanneAllen\/status\/1632059820974002179\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeanneAllen\/status\/1632059820974002179\">tweeted earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis has TEACHERS UNION written all over it,\u201d she added, prompting the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PFTLocal3\/status\/1633135626122936320?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PFTLocal3\/status\/1633135626122936320?s=20\">to respond that it<\/a> \u201chas no involvement in writing or production of the incredible @AbbottElemABC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another tweet last week, Allen said that Quinta Brunson, \u201cAbbott Elementary\u2019s\u201d creator and star, \u201cis from West Philly and attended charter schools her entire education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe reportedly loved it at the time, heaped praise on it. Once upon a time. Guess money talks,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Brunson <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/quintabrunson\/status\/1636402776694730753\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/quintabrunson\/status\/1636402776694730753\">replied in a tweet that<\/a> Allen is \u201cwrong and bad at research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only attended a charter for high school. My public elementary school was transitioned to charter over a decade after I left. I did love my high school. That school is now defunct- which happens to charters often,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>ABC declined multiple requests for comment from The Hill.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>For the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, it all came to a head in the most recent episode, which saw the Abbott faculty band together with a festival and a petition to defend their turf, rallying parents and the rest of the community behind keeping the school out of Legendary\u2019s hands. With three episodes left this season, it remains to be seen if Legendary has been completely vanquished or will again rear its head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbbott Elementary\u2019 resonates with educators and parents across the country because it accurately and humorously depicts the real situation in America\u2019s public schools,\u201d said National Education Association President Becky Pringle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt discusses the real challenges our public schools face, including the lack of funding and resources, and how for-profit charters and vouchers divert funding out of our public schools,\u201d Pringle added.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, says that TV \u201ccomedies have dealt with major political issues\u201d since the 1970s, but what makes \u201cAbbott\u201d interesting is \u201cyou\u2019ve got this popular show\u201d essentially serving as \u201ca delivery system for information\u201d on a topic that many people don\u2019t know much about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t, however, expect it to do this issue with all of its nuance, just like you\u2019re not going to watch \u2018Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u2019 if you want to learn \u2026 how to do emergency surgery,\u201d Thompson said.<\/p>\n<p>But, in his opinion, \u201cit\u2019s done a pretty noble job of dealing with this subject,\u201d albeit from a very particular perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d is \u201cso earnest, and it\u2019s so sincere, that even for those who disagree, it\u2019s a lot harder show to hate on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Veney, of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, may or may not agree there, but she does not appear to have lost her sense of humor on the subject. At the end of the day, she points out, it is just a TV show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is satire, there is poking fun at it.
