James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, agreed that it could be politically unsustainable to investigate Jared Kushner \u2014 former President Trump\u2019s son-in-law who served as a senior adviser in the White House \u2014 in a new profile by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/james-comer-republican-oversight-biden.html\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Times, which interviewed Comer for six hours, said the Kentucky Republican did not rule out probing Kushner\u2019s business dealings but agreed with a reporter who suggested it might be politically unsustainable for him to investigate Kushner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t disagree with what you said,\u201d Comer said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper.<\/p>\n<p>Comer secured the gavel for the House Oversight and Accountability Committee in January, when Republicans officially took control of the lower chamber. The panel plays a central role in the House GOP\u2019s investigative oversight, and the conference has vowed probes into a number of areas, including President Biden\u2019s family, the situation at the southern border and the messy withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In his roughly first two months on the job, Comer eliminated a probe looking into Kushner\u2019s business dealings, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/chairwoman-maloney-launches-probe-of-saudi-government-s-2-billion-investment-in\">panel launched an investigation<\/a> into Kushner in June 2022, when it was still in Democrats\u2019 hands, zeroing in on whether or not the president\u2019s son-in-law\u2019s personal financial interests improperly influenced U.S. foreign policy during the Trump administration. Democrats asked Kushner for documents related to an investment his firm, A Fin Management, LLC (Affinity), received from the Saudi Government once he departed the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the top Democrat on the Oversight committee, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2023-02-15.%20JBR%20to%20Kushner%20re%20Saudi%20Arabia.fnl_.pdf\">re-upped that request in a letter<\/a> to Kushner last month after his firm \u201cfailed to substantially comply with our requests, including by failing to produce the key documents we are seeking.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Asked about investigating questions regarding Kushner\u2019s ties to the Saudis, Comer told ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week\u201d last month that \u201ceverything\u2019s on the table\u201d but turned to the panel\u2019s probe into the Biden family\u2019s business dealings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t disagree with the Democrats and their criticism of the previous administration. We have a problem here that needs a legislative solution. That\u2019s why this Biden investigation is so important. There\u2019s a legislative solution to this, and it can be bipartisan,\u201d Comer said. \u201cThe Democrats complained about Kushner\u2019s foreign dealings. Republicans are certainly complaining about the entire Biden family\u2019s foreign business dealings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to know what is allowable and what isn\u2019t allowable. We need to have strict ethics laws. And we need to significantly increase the disclosure laws in America.
