He was 64.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Lomis most recently served as MGM\u2019s head of distribution and was in the midst of helping parent company Amazon Studios prepare for the theatrical release of Ben Affleck\u2019s <em>Air<\/em>, which opens in theaters April 5. Amazon recently signed Lomis to a new deal after officially acquiring the storied film studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Lomis watched over the box office like a hawk and was renowned for his detailed notes analyzing the theatrical lineup every weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The Philadelphia native worked at MGM from 1993-2011, leaving as president of worldwide distribution after strategizing on such films as <em>Legally Blonde<\/em> (2001), <em>Barbershop<\/em> (2002) and the James Bond films <em>Goldeneye<\/em> (1995), <em>Tomorrow Never Dies<\/em> (1997), <em>The World Is Not Enough<\/em> (1999) and <em>Die Another Day<\/em> (2002).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He joined The Weinstein Co. and served through 2016 as president of worldwide theatrical distribution, home entertainment and acquisitions, shepherding such releases as <em>Silver Linings Playbook<\/em> (2012), <em>Django Unchained<\/em> (2012) and <em>The Hateful Eight<\/em> (2015).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Lomis launched a distribution division at Megan Ellison\u2019s Annapurna Pictures in 2016 before segueing three years later to United Artists Releasing, the joint venture of MGM and Annapurna that rolled out <em>No Time to Die<\/em> (2021) during the immense challenges of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    MGM absorbed UAR after the Amazon purchase, and Lomis recently spearheaded the release of the best picture Oscar nominee <em>Women Talking<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After graduating from Thomas Jefferson University in 1980, Lomis served as the head film buyer for the Philadelphia-based Sameric Theatres. He was there when the original <em>Star Wars<\/em> was coming to the big screen in 1977.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIn the months before it opened, a lot of the older guys thought of <em>Star Wars<\/em> as a kiddie movie,\u201d he told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> in 2015. \u201cThe cast meant nothing, and no one knew who George Lucas was.
