“#Fleet of moving trucks mark exodus from Manhattan\u2019s troubled Upper West Side<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Moving trucks were out in force on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side on Saturday \u2014 leaving Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa practically trip<\/a>ping over them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mass evacuation of Upper West Siders from NYC is in full effect,\u201d Sliwa, who lives on W. 87th Street, lamented, blaming the city\u2019s decision this summer to house hundreds of emotionally disturbed homeless and recovering addicts in neighborhood hotels.<\/p>\n

A mayoral candidate, Sliwa has been organizing and often leading Guardian Angels patrols of the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were stacked up,\u201d Sliwa told The Post of the four trucks he saw as took a morning walk on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Stopping at each truck, he was told each was heading out of state.<\/p>\n

No sooner had Sliwa stepped out of his apartment building \u2014 where nine out of the 12 units are empty \u2014 than he saw the first moving truck of the morning.<\/p>\n

It was the eighth truck he\u2019s seen on his block in less than two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe moment I walked out on my block, near Central Park West, there was a moving truck. I asked where you going, and they said, \u2018Virginia,’\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey told me, \u2018Curtis, first the pandemic hit us and now the quality of life is so bad’\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman was almost crying. They said they survived the \u201970s,\u201d as a young couple in the then-high crime neighborhood. \u201cBut then in a month, in July, the neighborhood was destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his way to his local deli at West 87th Street and Columbus Avenue, he saw the second truck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were heading to Concord, New Hampshire,\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n

The third truck was nearby, on Columbus at West 84th Street.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were moving to Tennessee. The driver told me \u2018We\u2019re working morning, noon and night\u2019 to move people out of state.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fourth truck was at W. 75th and Central Park West.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a young family,\u201d a mom and dad, and a little boy and girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were moving themselves down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina,\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said in the last month, there have been so many disturbed people in the streets, aggressively panhandling, defecating, urinating \u2014 they leave the hotels and have no bathrooms to use,\u201d Sliwa said of the new homeless neighbors, who he believes are also victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the people who elected de Blasio, who live here,\u201d Sliwa said. \u201cIt\u2019s a progressive, liberal neighborhood. And now there\u2019s a visceral hate here for him \u2014 the feeling that he has virtually singlehandedly destroyed this city.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
