(Photos courtesy Filament)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entrepreneur Ben Lightburn became interested in psychedelics in 2018, when he read about the promising results emerging from clinical trials. He had just sold his company, Mazza Innovation, which developed botanical extraction technologies for companies producing cosmetics and dietary supplements. The psychedelics industry, he realized, mostly produced synthetically manufactured psilocybin for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research and development: it\u2019s incredibly difficult to extract psilocybin from mushrooms in a way that\u2019s standardized and stable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightburn saw an opportunity to leverage his team\u2019s botanical extraction expertise to bring the first pharmaceutical-grade, naturally extracted psychedelics into the market. His company, Filament Health, extracts drugs like psilocybin, psilocyn, ayahuasca, mescaline and salvia primarily for research and development purposes, but psilocybin can be delivered to patients via Health Canada\u2019s Special Access Program. People with serious conditions can use the program to request treatments that Health Canada hasn\u2019t yet <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved. The company currently supplies about 70 patients across the country, most of whom are dealing with serious depression or terminal cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside Filament\u2019s lab, four scientists grow a variety of mushrooms, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psilocybe tampanensis and<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psilocybe cubensis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (their nicknames are a bit more playful, like Jack Frost, Albino Penis Envy and Blue Meanie). Then they dry the mushrooms and mill them into a powder. After that, the active ingredients are extracted, purified, mixed with different excipients and preserved. Finally, they\u2019re poured into capsules, packaged and sent around the globe. We took a look inside their lab to see how it all goes down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1244814 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament13-e1679667069879.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1992\" height=\"1639\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filament moved into their Vancouver lab in 2020 and employ four full-time staff there, including their chief <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> officer, a mycologist, an analytical chemist and a quality control specialist. The rest of the team works remotely, and Lightburn splits his time between the lab and home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1244815 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament14-e1679667038282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1994\" height=\"1720\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mushrooms grow in these containers, which provide a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled environment that optimizes humidity and minimizes contamination. The growing medium is made of organic Canadian rye grain and coconut coir. They harvest approximately 10 to 50 kilograms of mushrooms every month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1244816 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament1-e1679667000179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1178\" height=\"1284\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, lab workers are harvesting a strain of mushroom called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psilocybe cubensis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of the reasons Lightburn thinks consumers will want naturally extracted psilocybin over synthetic is because of something called the \u201centourage effect,\u201d which is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the idea that a natural plant has more than just one active ingredient. \u201cWhen you make a natural extract, you\u2019re also preserving all the other compounds that are present in the mushroom,\u201d says Lightburn. \u201cFor example, wine is more than just alcohol, and coffee is more than just caffeine.\u201d Mushrooms also contain compounds like psilocyn, norpsilocin, baeocystin and norbaeocystin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1244817 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament2-e1679666964952.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1181\" height=\"1213\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The harvester must delicately cut the mushroom at the base to minimize bruising.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1244818 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament6-e1679664766338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2666\" height=\"2000\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, mushrooms are placed in a dehydrator before processing (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psilocybe cubensis <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is over 90 per cent water).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1244819 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament9-e1679666926354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1994\" height=\"1800\"\/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psilocybe cubensis <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are grown in many substances, depending on the desired properties. These ones grow in rye grain and Coco peat fibre.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1244821 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Filament10-e1679666884850.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1999\" height=\"2066\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filament grows their mushrooms for two purposes. For their own<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research and development, they evaluate the different strains for their potency, growth speed and resistance to contamination.
