href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/01\/18\/arts\/music\/18dram.html\">federal agents raided<\/a> DJ Drama\u2019s studio on behalf of the RIAA in 2007, mixtape distribution was forced to shift from a semi-legal physical market to the internet, where r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ers took advantage of a lowered barrier to entry and laxer copyright laws. Online mixtapes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/2014\/12\/the-minds-behind-musics-biggest-tech-advances-in-the-last-10-years\">weren\u2019t exactly brand new<\/a>, nor were they the beloved format they are today (Drama <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/article\/9913-still-got-it-4-cheap-clipse-and-the-rise-of-online-mixtapes\/\">said<\/a> he once considered websites like DatPiff to be \u201cthe enemy\u201d), but with the physical mixtape <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> a target of a struggling music industry looking to stop its bleeding, artists had to quickly adapt to continue promoting their music. Budgets weren\u2019t coming back overnight. <\/p>\n<p>            Last week, when <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/itsBX\/status\/1635441370260463621\">rumors that DatPiff would be shutting down circulated on Twitter<\/a>, it felt like yet another crucial piece of the internet had fallen to the same abrupt and untimely death that so many other beloved websites have in the past. This didn\u2019t come without alarm. Since at least early March, it hasn\u2019t been possible to download mixtapes from the website. The rumors sent a ripple through Twitter, stirring everyone from veteran bloggers to younger critics with little memory of the Blog Era to current-day file hoarders and diggers to former devotees who haven\u2019t touched the website in years. If you had any interest in the last 15 years of rap, you took at least a tweet\u2019s length of time to pour some out in honor of the mixtape distribution platform.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-244227\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-244179\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            A maybe-sigh of relief: That same night DatPiff <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DatPiff\/status\/1635470305052471298\">tweeted<\/a> that they would \u201cstill be supplying you with all the mixtapes you love\u201d and that the site and app had \u201ctechnical issues\u201d actively being worked on. It remains to be seen whether the tweet was genuine or simply a way to assuage people\u2019s fears before the inevitable. As of this publication, the website still doesn\u2019t load properly, and its Android app remains unlisted from the Google Play store.<\/p>\n<p>            Have you noticed that the internet keeps getting smaller? Surviving websites and apps are overloaded with underused features and packed with subscriptions, storefronts, and screen-sized ads. The cramped feeling caused runs side-by-side with the oft-repeated and patently untrue pieces of received wisdom about the internet \u2014 that \u201cthe entire record of human knowledge is in your pocket,\u201d or that \u201cSpotify has everything you could ever want to listen to.\u201d These ideas, prevailing and repeated without question, feel like a cruel PR-fueled joke bankrolled by tech companies. How could everything be available if websites like DatPiff keep slipping away? (In the time between me pitching and writing this column, it was announced that ZippyShare would be closing down.)<\/p>\n<p>            There are two phases whenever a Blog Era mixtape is announced to be coming to streaming platforms. The first: people cheer that it&#8217;s been &#8220;freed&#8221; from a weird streaming-imposed digital limbo.The second: when the fear that uncleared samples might lead to a track with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v_aYEOqAbSs\">replayed sample<\/a>, or maybe it\u2019ll be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rb-hip-hop\/chance-the-rapper-juice-acid-rap-streaming-services-8518032\/\">a thirty-second ad for charity<\/a>, or, worse, that the tracklist will end up mangled by clearances and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayplayer.com\/music\/lil-wayne-no-ceilings-drops-on-streaming-platforms.html\">leave out half of a 21-track mixtape<\/a>. Our cultural memory may end up warped and dictated by streaming catalogs. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-244228\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-244180\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Mixtapes aren\u2019t the only victims. When De La Soul\u2019s sample-laden discography arrived on streaming for the first time earlier this month, it was known that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayplayer.com\/music\/de-la-soul-samples-deborah-mannis-gardner-interview.html\">some samples would be recreated<\/a>. Regardless of whether or not listeners can identify replayed samples or other alterations in De La\u2019s streaming catalog (I\u2019m a \u201898 baby, there\u2019s no way I could spot them all) something definitive is being lost as streaming-approved releases take over. Even when it comes to platforms like YouTube, where multiple versions of a track exist freely, it can still take some crafty digging to find what you need.<\/p>\n<p>            Four years ago, Jack Denton took a glimpse into our near future, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/psmag.com\/social-justice\/a-generation-of-hip-hop-was-given-away-for-free-can-it-be-archived\">writing about actions that could\u2014and have\u2014been taken to preserve the musical archives of websites like DatPiff<\/a> if they disappeared and the difficulties of conserving a primarily digital history. \u201cArchiving practices have historically centered around physical objects, often failing to preserve large swaths of oral cultures and other immaterial cultural artifacts,\u201d he wrote. (Another note about that ever-contracting internet: <i>Pacific Standard<\/i>, the site that published Denton\u2019s piece in June 2019, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nbj914\/status\/1159185980902871041\">ceased publishing<\/a> a few months later.)<\/p>\n<p>            The blanket answer is, as many said on that Monday, to download everything you love and back it up. But that\u2019s all it is: a blanket. If all that\u2019s saved is what\u2019s loved, and likely already well-preserved, what happens to everything else? 6.7\/10 personal classics and the work of yet-to-be-remembered regional rappers are equally as worthy of being saved as the original De La Soul releases. But if last week scared even just a fraction of people into seriously building a personal archive, it\u2019s better than nothing. It\u2019s a different mode from his 2022 project <i>Now They Know Us 3<\/i>,  which channeled the ornate build-ups and sweeping, feeling of mid-2010\u2019s Chief Keef into a swelling wave of forward momentum. Though on \u201cu can see,\u201d the Boston rapper\u2019s sweetened, jaunty singing reminds me more of Pi\u2019erre Bourne. He might be a problem. His songs feel like they\u2019re running on a single-lane track that grows narrower by the meter where any possible tension\u2019s converted to combustible fuel at a pure 1:1 ratio. \u201cFEEL LIKE PAT\u201d and \u201cWAR,\u201d a pair of recently released tracks, have beats so heavy that you\u2019d still be able to feel your headphones vibrating at 25% volume.
