inflation?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A Trump-era holdover central to determining what direction the U.S. financial system\u00a0is going may be poised to cause political problems for the White House, just as President Joe Biden was enjoying the slightest of improvements in the economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell once again this week opted for\u00a0an\u00a0interest rate hike amid his managing historic economic turmoil in the form of banking failures that sparked fears on the financial market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The White House consistently uses one word to describe the Fed \u2014 independent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden renominated Powell, a Republican, when he took office, which came in the face of opposition from most prominent progressive politicians. <\/p>\n<p>Since then,\u00a0officials have worked hard to create distance between Biden and Powell to hone in on the notion that the Fed is in fact a separate agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But some political watchers say there\u2019s only so much distancing Biden can do when he takes to the campaign trail. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Find continue to still face gorging prices on goods and higher rates than in recent years to borrow money for homes and cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The personal relationship between Biden and Powell is not something the White House advertises. <\/p>\n<p>While Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Monday said he talked to Powell \u201coften\u201d during the weekend that Silicon Valley Bank collapsed and regulators were deciding how to handle it, it\u2019s unclear how often Biden and Powell spoke. <\/p>\n<p>Powell does meet weekly, however, with Treasury Sec. But Powell enjoyed broad bipartisan support and his nomination passed the Senate in an\u00a080-19 vote.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Progressives like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) didn\u2019t support his nomination and have been constant Powell critics. Warren this week warned that millions of Americans could lose their jobs if the Fed doesn\u2019t pause interest rate increases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She teamed up with conservative Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) on a bill to require an independent inspector <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, who would be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, to oversee Federal Reserve Board of Governors and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warren blasts banking regulators: Warren takes center stage in banking fight after SVB collapse\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Others have also been critical of the rate hike and raised questions over if enough is enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I think that the White House is right that their best move is to appoint good people and then have faith in their judgement, I don\u2019t agree with Powell\u2019s recent rate hikes, nor the reasoning behind them,\u201d said Josh Bivens, research director at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think lots of evidence is out there that disinflationary pressures are building while there are also lots of building risks to keeping unemployment low,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Biden_is_unlikely_to_break_with_Powell_on_policy\"><\/span>Biden is unlikely to break with Powell on policy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite some pressure on Biden to break with Powell, it would be shocking if the president did. The White House has time and time again stressed that Biden stands by Powell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president still has confidence in Jerome Powell,\u201d Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday, adding that the White House won\u2019t interfere or get involved with his decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The political pressure for Biden to step in on the Fed\u2019s decisions is mostly coming from the left, and arrives when the president doesn\u2019t yet have any serious challengers for the Democratic nomination in 2024.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Major risks: Silicon Valley Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>led loans to insiders in months before its collapse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is an institutionalist who has been pivoting to the center on multiple issues and needs a recovering economy in 2024.\u00a0 The Fed is the ultimate centrist institution with massive power to impact the election year economy,\u201d said Bruce Mehlman, former assistant secretary at the Commerce Department under President George W. Bush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only risk of hugging it out with Powell is if he gets primaried from the left,\u201d Mehlman said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?w=900\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3914281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg 6000w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=1080,720 1080w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=2048,1365 2048w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=645,430 645w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=50,33 50w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/641c622963b258.61463269.jpeg?resize=876,584 876w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 876px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">President Joe Biden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_can_Biden_do_to_slow_down_rate_hikes\"><\/span>What can Biden do to slow down rate hikes?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s also not much Biden can do to oppose the Fed besides publicly speaking out against it.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump did just that when he said in 2019 that Powell is doing a bad job, he disagrees with him entirely, and he has the right to fire him.<\/p>\n<p>While the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 allows a president to remove a Fed chair \u201cfor cause,\u201d Powell pushed back on Trump at the time and said that the law is clear that he has been approved for a four-year term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot imagine Biden would ever speak publicly about disagreements with Powell. \u2018The Fed is independent\u2019 has always been a strongly-held stance among executive branch policymakers, and, I don\u2019t see any indication that the Biden admin believes this any less than predecessors,\u201d Bivens said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe obvious exception is Trump and I think the contrast with Trump just adds one more reason why the Biden admin would be more likely to adopt a public stance that is protective of Fed independence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_the_Federal_Reserve_independent\"><\/span>Why is the Federal Reserve independent?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Other economists say that the White House\u2019s strategy to stress that the Fed is independent is the smartest move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great strategy and it\u2019s also one that is an institution,\u201d said Ellen Hughes-Cromwick, a former chief economist at the Commerce Department under Obama and a fellow at the centrist Democratic think tank Third Way. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe administration of any White House restrains their comments so that the Fed can exercise independence. It\u2019s absolutely critical,\u201d she said. \u201cWe really can\u2019t have a Fed that\u2019s got a White House breathing down their neck in every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Powell has been the face of numerous monetary policy decisions while the U.S. has grappled with high inflation for months, another official could take some of the heat off of him. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Who will lead the inquiry? Six key players to watch in the banking crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michael Barr, Federal Reserve vice chair of supervision, has been tasked with conducting an assessment of how the Fed ran oversight practices for Silicon Valley Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Some more heat could be taken off of Powell over his move to raise interest rates because the Fed projected that rate increases will slow down this year.
