\n [This story contains spoilers for the fourth season premiere of Succession<\/em> on HBO.]<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n Most of Sunday\u2019s Succession<\/em> premiere was taken up by a bidding war between media<\/a> mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his three younger children, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin). After their dad (with an assist from their mom) effectively cut them out of the family business at the end of season three, the siblings celebrate seemingly getting one over on Logan after outbidding him for the rival Pierce media empire.<\/p>\n

\n And then Shiv heads home to New York to pick up some clothes from the apartment she no longer really shares with her estranged husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen). He\u2019s there too, and what follows is a gut-wrenching scene \u2014 despite the fact that neither participant so much as raises their voice.<\/p>\n

\n Tom unwittingly set Shiv and her brothers\u2019 play for Pierce in motion with a phone call to Shiv telling her he met (or had a drink with, or something) with Naomi Pierce, a scion of the family and Kendall\u2019s ex-girlfriend. But they don\u2019t talk about that, and in keeping with the dynamics of their relationship, they also haven\u2019t really addressed Tom\u2019s siding with Logan in the play that froze her, Roman and Kendall out.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think what Tom really wants is to talk about what happ<\/a>ened,\u201d Macfadyen told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s been no postmortem at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Shiv takes a different tack, telling him \u201cI hear you date models now. Did you get buff for the models, Tom? Do you bring them back here and do the positions? Do you do all the positions with your models, Tom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s her way of trying to get a rise out of Tom, Snook tells THR<\/em>: \u201cShe\u2019s hoping that Tom will fight back. She\u2019s throwing out barbs and saying, \u2018We should break up. We shouldn\u2019t be together, we should just call it quits now.\u2019 [She hopes] that he might argue back and say no, no, there\u2019s space, convincingly, and try and convince her to stay so that she has the power.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Tom, however, doesn\u2019t do that. He challenges Shiv \u2014 \u201cDo you really want to get into a full accounting of all the pain in our marriage? \u2018Cause if you do, I can do that\u201d \u2014 but when he does, she immediately moves on to saying they should formalize their separation.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe didn\u2019t have the chance to discuss it or explain his reasonings, or to have the chance to tell her that there wasn\u2019t anything he did that she wouldn\u2019t have done or wouldn\u2019t do,\u201d Macfadyen said. \u201cShe shuts it down, and it\u2019s quite sad.\u201d (Tom himself replies, \u201cThat makes me sad,\u201d when Shiv suggests they end their marriage.)<\/p>\n

\n Shiv seems on the verge of tears when she repeats that talking won\u2019t help anything, but she can\u2019t bring herself to say why.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s kind of heartbreaking,\u201d Snook said. \u201cShe can\u2019t really say what she needs or wants, and instead stitches herself up.\u201d It\u2019s a trait that Snook thinks is probably ingrained in Shiv by now: \u201cShe\u2019s a lot like Logan, and I don\u2019t think Logan\u2019s ever really been happy in romantic love. I think probably Shiv would be just as lonely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The soon-to-be former couple ends the scene lying on a bed, agreeing in their exhaustion to sleep next to (but not with) each other for one more night. \u201cWe gave it a go,\u201d Shiv tells Tom. Taking her hand, he concurs: \u201cYeah, we gave it a go.\u201d<\/p>\n
