\n Blame it on the fangs. <\/p>\n

\n On the heels of Renfield<\/em> director Chris McKay saying Nicolas Cage went method on the set while playing Dracula \u2014 the filmmaker told Insider<\/a> <\/em>\u201cwhatever scene we did he would still be 100 percent living in that attitude after we stopped shooting\u201d \u2014 the veteran actor recalled his own version of events to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> at the film\u2019s New York premiere. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI just don\u2019t have that recollection, I don\u2019t know why Chris said that,\u201d Cage said. \u201cI had a lot of laughs in between takes with both Chris McKay and Nick Hoult so maybe that was his experience, maybe because I still had the fangs in my mouth that made me speak a certain way, but that wasn\u2019t my experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Either way, the role requires range for Cage who, after a career of iconic roles, steps into one of the most notable as Dracula in\u00a0Universal\u2019s new horror comedy Renfield<\/em>. Cage stars opposite\u00a0Nicholas Hoult, who plays Dracula\u2019s tortured assistant as he seeks a life outside of serving The Count, and said he was drawn to the dual tones of the film.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWith this Dracula I was trying to fuse that which is scary and humorous even at the same time in the line delivery,\u201d he said on Tuesday. \u201cIt was just how can you be creepy and funny at the same time, that was the challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

\n As Cage himself noted, \u201cDracula is a character that\u2019s been done many times, it\u2019s been done well a few times.\u201d He said the performances of Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, Frank Langella and Gary Oldman served as a starting point, but his father August Coppola was the biggest influence on his portrayal. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe always spoke with distinction, he was always very elegant and eloquent, he was always the smartest man in every room he walked in and he knew, and he made sure we knew,\u201d Cage explained. \u201cI think Dracula, being around for so many years, would have some of that aura.\u201d He also cited Anne Bancroft\u2019s performance in The Graduate<\/em> as another inspiration, who he thought was \u201cvery seductive and Dracula-esque. So I was looking at her manner of speaking, kind of mid-Atlantic vocalization that both my father and Anne Bancroft had.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n As for Hoult, Renfield served as a reunion with Cage after the two worked together on 2005\u2019s The Weather Man<\/em>, when the actor was just 14. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think getting to work with him again as an adult gave me a true app<\/a>reciation of what a master he is of the craft, how much he\u2019s given to the cinematic world over the years, all of the iconic performances he\u2019s given, and I think this is another one,\u201d Hoult told THR<\/em>, adding that when he read the script \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, this feels very different. It\u2019s a swing, but if it works then I think we have a fun movie.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n McKay said he knew Cage was right to play the iconic vampire because \u201cthe way the script was written, he\u2019s supposed to be the rock \u2018n\u2019 roll Dracula, so what better person to embody rock \u2018n\u2019 roll Dracula than Nicolas Cage? He can wear rings, he can wear the outfits, he looks amazing, and he\u2019s got the right attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The director remembered that that he was \u201calmost in tears\u201d the first time he saw Cage fully in costume: \u201cIt was like OK, this movie is going to work.\u201d Co-star Ben Schwartz also said Cage was right for the role \u201cbecause I think he\u2019s unpredictable, I think he brings such uniqueness to roles, you kind of don\u2019t know what he\u2019s going to do,\u201d noting that he brings 110 percent to every scene. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSo he\u2019s in there, and when he\u2019s Dracula, he\u2019s so in the zone, and he gets himself pumped up and it\u2019s just like you\u2019re acting with Dracula,\u201d Schwartz said. \u201cAnd the best part is when they say \u2018Cut,\u2019 you\u2019re just standing next to Dracula hanging out afterwards being like, \u2018So I loved Adaptation<\/em>.\u2019 So it\u2019s very fun.\u201d <\/p>\n
