Some might think Andrea Jin\u2019s trademark sweet-then-dark jokes about, say, China\u2019s one-child policy, veer into too-far territory, but 250,000 TikTok followers can\u2019t be wrong. Mulan<\/em>, her grandparents\u2014all of it is fodder for the Vancouver comedia<\/a>n, who has channelled her dry, yeah-I-said-it sensibility into online acclaim and a ticket to Los Angeles (where she now lives).<\/p>\n

Now 27, Jin was just 10 when her family immigrated from China to Vancouver. After school, she received English lessons from Family Guy<\/em> and Russell Peters\u2019s stand-up\u2014stuff no kid should hear. \u201cMy parents didn\u2019t speak English either, so they couldn\u2019t tell,\u201d she says. She got hooked on performing during a five-minute set at a campus comedy event at Western University, where she studied business. Everyone was eating and doing homework, but Jin wasn\u2019t fazed. She quit school, took a job at a Vancouver steakhouse and gigged at small comedy clubs around the city\u2014for free, at first. In 2019, Jin was a finalist in SiriusXM\u2019s Top Comic competition. Then she app<\/a>eared at Just for Laughs in Montreal. \u201cThings just snowballed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as her career began to resemble those of her idols, Jin still didn\u2019t see herself in their shoes. \u201cThose male powerhouses were great,\u201d Jin says, \u201cbut being an Asian girl, none of them had my perspective.\u201d That is until Grandma\u2019s Girl<\/em>, a 2020 recording of Jin\u2019s most crowd-pleasing bits, including \u201cWax Me\u201d and \u201cAsians Are in Movies<\/a> Now.\u201d Every single track was labelled \u201cexplicit\u201d on Apple Music.<\/p>\n

When gigs dried up during the pandemic, Jin\u2019s manager, who signed her after a New Faces showcase at Just for Laughs, suggested she post clips of Grandma\u2019s Girl<\/em> online. Initially, Jin thought it was \u201ccringe.\u201d But her riffs on the pitfalls of social media and gently rejecting her female friends\u2014she\u2019s bisexual\u2014have since earned Jin hundreds of thousands of fans, who flood her DMs with gratitude for making them feel seen. \u201cI do this for selfish reasons\u2014I didn\u2019t know it would affect others positively,\u201d she says, laughing, then uncharacteristically earnest. \u201cIt keeps me going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last spring, Grandma\u2019s Girl<\/em> won a Juno for Comedy Album of the Year, and recently, Jin was hired to write for the Comedy Central series Digman!<\/em> She\u2019s gone Hollywood insofar as she\u2019s already booked James Corden and has written a sitcom pilot (with plans to pitch), but she\u2019s still shocked when she\u2014\u201cjust some Canadian!\u201d\u2014gets recognized on the street. It brings to mind one of Jin\u2019s favourite jokes, her long-time opener, where she asks the audience if it\u2019s okay that she\u2019s an immigrant. They seem to love it.<\/p>\n\n
