\n Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe on Sunday defended his office\u2019s decision to end in-person briefings to Congress about election security \u2014 as Rep. Adam Schiff said the Democratic-led House may subpoena intelligence officials to get the material.<\/p>\n

Ratcliffe, who notified the House and Senate intelligence panels Friday that he would be sending out written reports instead, told Fox News<\/a> on Sunday that information had been leaking out of the oral briefings almost immedia<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin minutes of one of those briefings ending, a number of members of Congress went to a number of different outlets and leaked classified information for political purposes,\u201d Ratcliffe told host Maria Bartiromo on \u201cSunday Morning Futures.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo create a narrative that simply isn\u2019t true, that somehow Russia is a greater national security threat than China.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ratcliffe said he doesn\u2019t want to \u201cminimize\u201d Russia\u2019s threat to the 2020 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are a serious national security threat, but day in, day out, the threats that we face from China are significantly greater,\u201d he said. \u201cAnyone who says otherwise is just politicizing intelligence for their own narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Schiff, the head of the House Intelligence Committee, accused the administration of playing down the threat of Moscow trying to meddle in the election as it did in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to put it in writing now instead of giving an oral briefing. That doesn\u2019t make any sense unless the goal is not to allow members of Congress, the representatives of the American people, to ask questions,\u201d Schiff told CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cConcealing the truth is concealing Russians are again intervening to help the president in his reelection,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The California Democrat said the House may subpoena intelligence officials before the November election, saying it is \u201ccertainly one of the tools that we may use.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the decision would ultimately be up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n

Schiff argued that intelligence about foreign interference in the election doesn\u2019t belong to Trump personally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis intelligence paid for by taxpayers doesn\u2019t belong to Donald Trump, it doesn\u2019t belong to the intelligence agencies, it belongs to the American people. The agencies are merely the custodians of that information,\u201d Schiff said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the American people ought to know what Russia is doing, they ought to know their President is unwilling to stand up to Vladimir Putin,\u201d Schiff added.<\/p>\n

Pelosi and Schiff in a statement Saturday said the decision by the intelligence community to end the oral briefings is a \u201cshocking abdication of its lawful responsibility to keep the Congress currently informed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump on Saturday singled out Schiff on Saturday as one of those who were spilling the beans.<\/p>\n

\u201cDirector Ratcliffe brought information into the committee and the information leaked,\u201d Trump told reporters as he surveyed hurricane damage in Texas. \u201cWhether it was Shifty Schiff or someone else, you have leakers on the committee who are doing bad things \u2026 and he got tired of it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
