\n The members of Fall Out Boy are weighing in on the impacts of AI and algorithms on the music industry.<\/p>\n

\n In a recent interview with The Independent<\/em><\/a>, the band discusses how their latest album, So Much (for) Stardust,<\/em> fits into their musical evolution and extensive discography as well as their musical growth. The band, which has been around for two decades, has always played with their tone, with their latest album arriving as a \u201cvery low-tech\u201d follow-up to the \u201ccyborg\u201d sounds of 2018\u2019s Mania, <\/em>according to <\/em>lead singer and lyricist Patrick Stump. <\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s a blending of the band\u2019s eras that also acknowledges the passage of time and the increasing rise of a \u201cpretty not authentic world,\u201d says bassist Pete Wentz, thanks to things like the metaverse and NFTs. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe live in a world where it\u2019s NFTs and avatars and my kids are constantly buying Fortnite<\/em> skins,\u201d Wentz says. \u201cI get it, I\u2019ve understood it, they\u2019ve educated me, I\u2019m download<\/a>ed on what this all is. But at the same time, I think that there\u2019s something in Fall Out Boy\u2019s DNA of being a little counterintuitive. I would rather do tangible things \u2014 I want this record to feel like it\u2019s something you could touch; you could go inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n That rejection of tech\u2019s growing presence in everyone\u2019s daily lives extends to the presence of chatbots and lyrics, with Stump sharing that a family member had once gotten ChatGPT to produce some lyrics. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey prompted it to write a Fall Out Boy song and then showed me the lyrics going, \u2018Wow, look at this!\u2019\u201d Stump recalled. \u201cI\u2019m going, \u2018Those are the worst lyrics I\u2019ve ever read.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

\n The singer acknowledges that artificial intelligence will get better with time, but says that ultimately it won\u2019t matter because what it creates will lack artistic authenticity and intent. \u201cI think it\u2019s very much in the realm of possibility that AI starts writing songs, that the songs start being good, whatever,\u201d he said. \u201cThe thing I wonder, in that Dr. Malcolm [from\u00a0Jurassic Park<\/em>] way \u2014\u00a0\u2018You ask what you could do, you never ask if you should\u2019 \u2014 is why? Art is about expression so if you\u2019re consuming art that has no expression behind it, what\u2019s the point?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n And while Stump says that he \u201cunderstands it from a capitalistic perspective,\u201d for consumers, \u201cas somebody experiencing art,\u201d it has little value. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere was this big controversy in New York about it but the artist was from somewhere in Africa where that specific material meant something specific,\u201d the Fall Out Boy frontman said, referencing Chris Ofili, a British artist of Nigerian descent, whose 1996 painting\u00a0The Holy Virgin Mary<\/em> featured one of the Virgin Mary\u2019s breasts rendered in elephant dung. \u201cIt didn\u2019t mean the same thing to us that it meant to him. So, the context was all of the art. If an AI did that, there\u2019s no story behind it. You have no connection with the AI.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Stumps adds that technology<\/a> will probably advance to the point that he\u2019s no longer hired to score movies<\/a>, \u201cbut at the end of the day I would hope there\u2019s still art that people are making because that\u2019s the point. That\u2019s the stuff we shouldn\u2019t be automating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Still, not all the technological advances of the last two decades are so bad. While the band remains weary of things like algorithms, Wentz says that streaming has increased the exposure of younger generations to older music and given newer artists the chance to play with the song form. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou\u2019re in this era where anything can get big and old songs get big, you could have a minute-long song, you could have no chorus, there\u2019s not a lot of rules,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you have a good song and an interesting perspective, maybe people will at least give it a shot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
