He claimed that Trump directed him to make the payment and that Trump reimbursed him in monthly installments that included a bonus.<\/p>\n<p>The payment was made as part of a nondisclosure agreement as Daniels was prepared to go public with claims she has a sexual relationship with Trump \u2014 an affair he denies.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly dismissed the investigation as a witch hunt and previously called on supporters to protest his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump has been indicted. He did not commit any crime. We will vigorously fight this this political prosecution in Court,\u201d Trump attorneys Joe Tacopina and Susan Necheles said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p>Trump himself noted the historic nature of the indictment in a lengthy statement that otherwise blasted Bragg and dismissed the validity of any charges, suggesting they were politically motivated.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNever before in our Nation\u2019s history has this been done,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to \u2018Get Trump,\u2019 but now they\u2019ve done the unthinkable \u2013 indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s office said little about the indictment Thursday beyond indicating Trump was soon to be arraigned.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis evening we contacted Mr. Trump\u2019s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal. Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected,\u201d a spokesman for the Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s Office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Trump\u2019s attorneys and campaign did not im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The charges against Trump follow\u00a0reports\u00a0that the grand jury empaneled to hear evidence in the case was not set to meet again to weigh evidence until late April.\u00a0Bragg retained the ability to call for a vote on the indictment even on days the grand jury was not meeting about the case.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Legal observers suggest an indictment of Trump would likely focus on charges of falsifying business records, but bumping that up from the misdemeanor to a felony could prove difficult.<\/p>\n<p>A felony charge requires a connection to a second crime and would augment the maximum prison time from one year to four years.<\/p>\n<p>State laws prohibit making \u201ca false entry in the business records of an enterprise\u201d \u2014 something Trump and Cohen may have violated by claiming the payments were for legal services that were never rendered.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump has also previously suggested the case extends beyond New York\u2019s statute of limitations, which for most state felonies is five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the case could be \u201ctolled,\u201d which allows for the extension of the timeline to bring criminal charges. New York allows such a move when a defendant has continually been out of the state.<\/p>\n<p>Though they are the first charges to be filed against Trump, others could soon follow.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump on Monday sought to quash an investigation by Georgia authorities over his effort to influence the election there.
