{"id":568356,"date":"2023-04-01T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-01T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/dems-react-to-trump-indictment-with-glee-and-anxiety\/"},"modified":"2023-04-01T17:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T14:30:00","slug":"dems-react-to-trump-indictment-with-glee-and-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/dems-react-to-trump-indictment-with-glee-and-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"#Dems react to Trump indictment with glee \u2014 and anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/sidewalk_trump-indictment_ny_033123getty_dems-anxiety.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House Democrats reacted with mixed emotions this week to the historic indictment of former President Trump, with some cheering the move with bald jubilation and others <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaching much more cautiously ahead of Trump\u2019s expected arraignment on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While both camps are united behind the central premise that no one in America is above the law, the tonal contrast highlights both the toxic nature of Trump\u2019s relationship with his congressional rivals and the Democrats\u2019 deep-seeded anxiety that the indictment will only invigorate his conservative base and make him a more formidable force in the race for the White House next year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Fueling that divide is the nature of the case being brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), which centers around Trump\u2019s role in providing hush payments to an adult film actress more than six years ago \u2014\u00a0a salacious saga divorced from the more serious allegations facing the former president, which relate to his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.<\/p>\n<p>On one side of the divide are Democrats who cheered Bragg\u2019s decision with evident glee. That group is composed largely of liberal and minority lawmakers, including members of the far-left \u201csquad,\u201d who have long accused Trump of being a racist and are now relishing an indictment they view as karmic justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrand Jury votes to indict Trump!\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1641556668642205697?cxt=HHwWgoC9kfjF_cctAAAA\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), one of three Muslim lawmakers in Congress who has been\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/15\/us\/politics\/trump-fact-check-ilhan-omar.html\">a frequent target<\/a>\u00a0of Islamophobic Trump attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time that we ensure Trump is banned from running for any public office again,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bowman.house.gov\/press-releases?ID=0EEC9FC3-245F-427F-AB6B-A797FFECDE5A\">echoed<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.).<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) shared in the celebration, saying the indictment is \u201cone of many steps\u201d toward eliminating Trump as a threat to fair elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will always believe that this twice-impeached former president is a threat to our democracy,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJimmyGomez\/status\/1641562257267085312?cxt=HHwWgMC-0Z6LgMgtAAAA\">he tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.)\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoriBush\/status\/1641600850891079681?cxt=HHwWgoC8xdfRkcgtAAAA\">tweeted a short clip<\/a>\u00a0of a crowd of women giving a standing ovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.)\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSummerLee\/status\/1641564886348988416?cxt=HHwWgICw6aKkgcgtAAAA\">responded to Trump\u2019s indictment<\/a>\u00a0with a single word: \u201cGood.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The celebratory mood is not being shared \u2014 at least not publicly \u2014 by a long list of other Democratic lawmakers, who are treading more carefully into the explosive debate. Those voices, which include members of Democratic leadership, have been no less critical of Trump over his political career, but are taking pains not to jump to conclusions before seeing the charges \u2014 which remain under seal \u2014 or reach a verdict before a jury does.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a moment to celebrate. This is a terrible moment for the country. But no one is above the law,\u201d Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) said on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cThose lock her up chants that people were chanting like hyenas in a stadium around the country were never funny, perhaps they now understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are also lingering anxieties that Trump, the current frontrunner in the early field seeking the GOP presidential nomination,\u00a0will get a boost from Bragg\u2019s decision, as Republicans \u2014 even some of Trump\u2019s 2024 rivals \u2014\u00a0race to defend the former president from what they consider a politically motivated witch hunt designed solely to damage his presidential prospects.<\/p>\n<p>Shedding a no-holds-barred approach to Trump in the past, many Democrats have adopted a neutral tone in response to the indictment, keeping a distance from the judicial process to let the wheels of the courts grind away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNo one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence,\u201d Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the former Speaker who was a target of the pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6, said in a brief and subdued statement. \u201cHopefully, the former President will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn America we believe in the rule of law,\u201d echoed Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), a fierce Trump critic. \u201cWe should wait to hear from the grand jury before jumping to conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.), who was among the managers of Trump\u2019s first impeachment,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJasonCrow\/status\/1641564877528391682?cxt=HHwWhICzjeGjgcgtAAAA\">called it<\/a>\u00a0\u201ca somber day for our nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) adopted the same muted tone, characterizing it as \u201ca serious moment\u201d for the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA jury of Donald Trump\u2019s peers will now determine his legal fate,\u201d Jeffries\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJeffries\/status\/1641652969186754560?cxt=HHwWgIC8ja-rqcgtAAAA\">tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s GOP allies, meanwhile, have rallied in his defense, characterizing the indictment \u2014 the first against any president, sitting or former \u2014\u00a0as a blatant \u201cweaponization\u201d of government by Democrats to take down a political rival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Trump derangement,\u201d Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) said Thursday evening as he was leaving his Capitol Hill office. \u201cIt\u2019s an illness of hatred that just \u2014 it shouldn\u2019t be in American politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson said House Republicans will move \u201cimmediately\u201d to uncover the details of Bragg\u2019s probe, and he has confidence that GOP investigators \u2014 notably Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), chairman of the Administration Committee \u2014 will demonstrate that Bragg\u2019s prosecution has been politically motivated from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to find out, from the inside, as to their correspondence and communications,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s case revolves around a $130,000 hush payment made by Michael Cohen, Trump\u2019s former lawyer and fixer, to the adult actress Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election in return for her silence about an alleged affair with Trump a decade earlier \u2014 an affair Trump denies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Manhattan grand jury\u00a0voted Thursday to indict Trump, who is expected to be arraigned in New York on Tuesday. The specific charges remain unknown, sealed until Trump\u2019s appearance, but reports from\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/30\/politics\/donald-trump-indictment\/index.html#:~:text=Donald%20Trump%20faces%20more%20than,appear%20in%20court%20on%20Tuesday.\">CNN<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-arrested-news-updates-indictment-counts-new-york-rcna77595\">NBC<\/a>\u00a0indicate he will face around 30 counts related to business fraud.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not all of Trump\u2019s critics cheered the arrival of the indictment this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump is also facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of separate criminal investigations into his conduct, including his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and the discovery of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, his resort-residence in South Florida. And some Democrats have hoped that the Justice Department, which is investigating Trump on several fronts, would have moved more quickly on those other cases to lend more gravity to their underlying charge that Trump is unfit to serve as president for another term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those voices fear that Bragg\u2019s case, by coming first, will only bolster the argument from Trump and his allies that Democrats are pursuing \u201cfrivolous\u201d cases designed solely to damage Trump politically.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, pressuring local officials to overturn the 2020 election, receiving financial kickbacks from foreign powers, and numerous other crimes during his presidency, it\u2019s embarrassing and infuriating that the first indictment against Trump is about \u2026 Stormy Daniels,\u201d Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe January 6th Select Committee and bold leaders like Jamie Raskin did their job,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Merrick Garland and the Justice Department to do theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid the emotional debate, some lawmakers are urging restraint by pointing out an obvious hole in the discussion: No one weighing in knows what charges await Trump next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a reminder,\u201d said Sen.
