Republicans at that time lashed out at the prospect of Trump being indicted.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Now that it is official, some of Trump\u2019s closest congressional allies are escalating their outrage \u2014 at the apparent encouragement of the former president \u2014 with everything from symbolic handouts of ham sandwiches to calls for protests and threats of retaliatory congressional investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) earlier this month said, \u201cwe don\u2019t need to protest\u201d Trump\u2019s potential arrest, but she changed her tune on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to New York on Tuesday. We MUST protest the unconstitutional WITCH HUNT!\u201d the Georgia Republican wrote on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtgreenee\/status\/1641793406539030528?s=20\">Twitter<\/a>.\u00a0Trump is expected to appear in court to hear the charges against him on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>And Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a close Trump ally,\u00a0facetiously suggested\u00a0the former president act violently when he is en route to his arraignment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can President Trump avoid prosecution in New York?\u201d Graham wrote on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC\/status\/1641833827084513283?s=20\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0with a thinking face emoji.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the way to the DA\u2019s office on Tuesday, Trump should smash some windows, rob a few shops and punch a cop. He would be released IM<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEDIA<\/a>TELY!\u201d he wrote in a subsequent\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC\/status\/1641833829030674432?s=20\">tweet<\/a>, an apparent reference to claims that the New York prosecutor is soft on crime.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign on Friday distributed a list of more than a hundred statements from Republicans showing support of him and outrage at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), in a clear sign that the former president is keeping track of which Republicans come to his defense.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GOP_pushes_for_Congress_to_act\"><\/span>GOP pushes for Congress to act<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A Manhattan grand jury\u00a0indicted Trump\u00a0on criminal charges Thursday for the alleged part he played in organizing hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. The indictment remains under seal, but several outlets reported that it includes more than 30 counts.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans\u00a0had\u00a0already zeroed in on Bragg, painting him as a partisan prosecutor who was out to get Trump. But their retaliation is now going beyond mere statements of outrage.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>After Trump teased his potential arrest, a trio of House GOP committee chairs asked Bragg to sit for a transcribed interview\u00a0to discuss his investigation. House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also\u00a0requested testimony\u00a0from two prosecutors who resigned from the New York case because of disagreements with Bragg.<\/p>\n<p>The Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office called allegations of politicization \u201cbaseless and inflammatory,\u201d warning Congress to not interfere with its prosecution, while also expressing some willingness to provide some information to Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the indictment now official, some Republicans are pushing for more congressional action.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Thursday pledged that the House \u201cwill hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.\u201d And Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), who served as physician to the president during the Trump administration, warned in a statement that \u201cit will ultimately be Alvin Bragg that pays the price for this abuse of office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe subpoenas should now fly,\u201d Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, said in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDanBishop\/status\/1641861228564733988?s=20\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Republicans have brushed off concern about interference in a prosecutorial proceeding, the House GOP\u2019s embrace of investigating any \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against Trump does risk taking away the focus from a host of\u00a0its\u00a0other priorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/jacksonronny_011023gn_w.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"Rep. Barry Morre (R-Ala.), another member of the House Judiciary Committee, said Bragg has forced them to investigate the alleged \u201cweaponization\u201d of his office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so many important issues before us, but what\u2019s more important than Americans\u2019 liberty and the opportunity to elect the president that you want to elect?\u201d Moore said. \u201cThey do in communist countries lock up political opponents, but not in the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore took a creative approach with his response to the Trump indictment. In a reference to the adage that a grand jury would \u201cindict a ham sandwich\u201d \u2014 poking fun at the ease prosecutors have in securing grand jury indictments \u2014 Moore handed out ham sandwiches at his Capitol Hill\u00a0office on Friday.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cYou can indict a ham sandwich, as they say, but at the end of the day you get an opportunity to defend yourself in court,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n<p>Moore also has some personal experience with indictments. As a state legislator in 2014, he was indicted on charges of perjury and giving false statements; he\u00a0was later found\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2014\/10\/barry_moore_trial_hold_1.html\">not guilty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community really rallied around me and my family. We had more door-knockers that Saturday after I was indicted,\u201d Moore said. \u201cI think it\u2019s important, too, to stand behind President Trump and his family and say, like those folks knocked doors for me, we\u2019re going to come to your rescue as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98United_support_with_nuance\"><\/span>\u2018United support\u2019 with nuance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite the Trump campaign\u2019s assertions that Republicans are showing \u201cunited support\u201d for Trump, some are taking a more subdued attitude about the indictment, waiting to see how the justice process plays out before syncing-up with other GOP lawmakers and calling the indictment a political prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust our legal system,\u201d Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) told The Hill in a text message. \u201cThere\u2019s checks and balances with a jury, judges and appeals. President Trump will be able to make his defense and we\u2019ll all see if this is a partisan prosecution or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The moderate Republican appeared to take a jab at both his colleagues on the right and left for their immediate reactions to the Trump indictment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeems un-American to cheer someone getting indicted or, as well, excoriate a prosecutor before the indictment is even released. I trust our legal system in the long run. We\u2019ll get a clearer picture as time goes on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, said she is \u201cmonitoring Donald Trump\u2019s legal situation as it unfolds,\u201d declining to take a side in the growing political debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is above the law in this country, but everyone deserves a fair legal process,\u201d Murkowski said in a statement. \u201cThe indictment of a former President is unprecedented and must be handled with the utmost integrity and scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of rushing to individual judgment, we must also evaluate the evidence as it becomes available and use it to inform our opinions and statements about what is actually happening,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
