\n Taraji P. Henson is joining Abbott Elementary.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n The Emmy-nominated actress will play Janine\u2019s (Quinta Brunson) mom, Vanetta. The Empire<\/em> star\u2019s first app<\/a>earance on the award-winning show will be in season two\u2019s penultimate episode, airing on April 12.<\/p>\n

\n The episode, appropriately titled \u201cMom,\u201d will see Brunson\u2019s Janine preparing to take a solo trip<\/a> over Memorial Day weekend. Her plans get derailed when her mom, played by Henson, appears unannounced and asks for help.<\/p>\n

\n Henson\u2019s casting was revealed at the Paley Center for Media<\/a>\u2019s PaleyFest in Los Angeles on Saturday during an Abbott Elementary<\/em> panel, which featured stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Wiliams and William Stanford Davis in person. The hit comedy\u2019s Janelle James and Chris Perfetti appeared via Zoom from New York, with Brunson sending a pre-taped message, as she prepares to host Saturday Night Live. <\/em><\/p>\n

\n Henson joins a string of guest stars to appear on Abbott Elementary <\/em>as part of Janine\u2019s family, with the show sharing more background on all of its characters. The Bear <\/em>star Ayo Edibiri appeared earlier in season two as Ayesha, Janine\u2019s sister. The teacher\u2019s strained relationship with her family has been touched on in past episodes, with Ayesha and Janine working through their issues. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think relationships with mothers are very defining, especially for someone who is then taking care of children \u2014 like Janine, who\u2019s caring for kids,\u201d Brunson told Reuters<\/em><\/a> in September 2022. \u201cIt connects a lot to her relationships in the school. I know a lot of women in my life who have had very complicated relationships with their moms unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Abbott Elementary <\/em>airs on ABC every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET. <\/p>\n
