Director Chad Stahelski Says \u201cWe\u2019re Open To It\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>John Wick: Chapter 4 <\/em>director Chad Stahelski admits he\u2019s open to a fifth film in his assassin franchise starring Keanu Reeves for Lionsgate, following <em>Chapter 4<\/em>\u2019s big debut. In its second weekend, the movie has already topped\u00a0$245 million globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt\u2019s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say \u2018We want more\u2019 and it\u2019s not just a cash grab. It\u2019s legitimately the audience wants more,\u201d he says in a new episode of <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2019s <em>Behind the Screen <\/em>podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>. \u201cI think we all need that little bit of time to go, \u2018Whew. Let\u2019s see what\u2019s next.\u2019 \u2026 If Keanu and I, a few months from now sit down at a whiskey bar in Japan again and go, \u2018Yep, we\u2019ll never do another one of those,\u2019 and then all of a sudden go, \u2018Yeah, but I got an idea,\u2019 we\u2019re open to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In the podcast episode, the director is joined by two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Dan Laustsen (who also lensed <em>Chapters 2<\/em> and <em>3<\/em> in the franchise) and editor Nathan Orloff (<em>Ghostbusters: Afterlife<\/em>) to detail the making of <em>John Wick 4<\/em>, which involved filming in Japan, France, Jordan, Germany and New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    That includes delving into action sequences such as one set around Paris\u2019 Arc de Triomphe and another on the 270 steps that lead to the hilltop Sacr\u00e9 C\u0153ur Basilica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe were [scouting] at the top of Sacr\u00e9 C\u0153ur, the sun had just set. We looked down the stairs from the top, and went, \u2018Oh, somebody\u2019s going down this,\u2019\u201d says the director, adding \u201cliterally we\u2019re like, not only is he going down this, we\u2019re gonna have John Wick fight his way up. We\u2019re gonna throw him back down and then we\u2019re gonna have him and Donnie [Yen\u2019s] character Caine do the Butch and Sundance thing and get to the top\u2026 We\u2019ll do the music and we\u2019ll make it like a Western. We\u2019ll have him fight all the way to the top and bond just so we can see who kills each other at the top.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Stahelski adds that he and Laustsen gave the night scene on the steps a moody atmosphere inspired by <em>The Exorcist<\/em>, using \u201cas much practical lighting as we can from the lamp posts and [we] put our cranes up to get some fill in and try to work backwards from that with atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    They also talked about the complex camera work, that involved Steadicam, handheld, as well as Spydercam to capture the fall. Says Stahelski, \u201cWhen you see Keanu run up the steps and the camera\u2019s going with him, that\u2019s a guy with 120 pounds Steadicam running up after him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    During the conversation, Stahelski, who is also a stunt performer, offered his take on the potential for stunts to become an Oscar category. \u201cI don\u2019t think you could find an argument or an individual with an argument that says stunts don\u2019t deserve an Oscar. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the issue. I just don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever had the talk,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been in the business 35 years, I\u2019ve never met a stunt person that\u2019s sat down with an Academy member, nor have I met an Academy member that\u2019s ever sat down with a stunt representative. That\u2019s probably the first problem.
