\n SUNY\u2019s campus in upstate Oneonta is closing after more than 100 people there tested positive for coronavirus following a series<\/a> of large parties in the opening week of classes, officials said Sunday.<\/p>\n

Even though classes only started Monday, local officials pushed to test the 3,000 students and teachers after many showed symptoms of COVID-19 following \u201cseveral large parties,\u201d SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras said.<\/p>\n

As of Sunday, at least 105 have tested positive \u2014 an alarming 3 percent of students and teachers on campus, Malatras said.<\/p>\n

The campus is now being closed for at least two weeks \u2014 and five students were suspended along with three student organizations, which were not identified.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be tough on those students not because we want to ruin their fun, but this is a different time,\u201d Malatras said, referring to the \u201cnew normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local residents are also being offered three rapid-result tests. \u201cMany of the students live off campus. There\u2019s a lot of interaction in the community,\u201d Malatras told reporters. \u201cWe want to manage the any potential spread and address it immedia<\/a>tely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said it highlighted fears that reopening schools and colleges could damage New York\u2019s progress against the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

As of Sunday,\u00a0 429 were hospitalized with the virus across the Empire State \u2014 the lowest figure since March.<\/p>\n

\u201cColleges to me are very much a canary in the coal mine,\u201d he said, warning they showed \u201cwhat happ<\/a>ens when you bring back a concentration of people\u201d as the pandemic continues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI studied when I was in college, but I know not everyone was in the library when I was there. I understand,\u201d he said of the parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if the students act irresponsibly, or the precautions are not in place, then the virus will spread, and then more dramatic action is going to have to be taken,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

The governor said it should serve as an alarm for other schools wrestling with how to open safely, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s anxious to get back to school, I get it. But everybody should be anxious to get back to a safe school,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
