{"id":568931,"date":"2023-04-05T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mcconnell-lets-an-indicted-trump-twist-in-the-wind\/"},"modified":"2023-04-05T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T10:00:00","slug":"mcconnell-lets-an-indicted-trump-twist-in-the-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mcconnell-lets-an-indicted-trump-twist-in-the-wind\/","title":{"rendered":"#McConnell lets an indicted Trump twist in the wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/trumpdonald_040423upi3_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and his top deputies stayed silent Tuesday as former President Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts, signaling how far they have diverged from their former ally.<\/p>\n<p>Many Republican senators blame Trump for the loss of the Senate majority and the dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing performance of Senate Republicans last year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>There are also big doubts about Trump\u2019s ability to win the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election in 2024, especially as he faces the prospect of additional charges from the Department of Justice and the Fulton County district attorney.<\/p>\n<p>His arraignment Tuesday only adds to the political baggage of the GOP presidential front-runner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McConnell, who hasn\u2019t spoken to Trump since December of 2020, didn\u2019t make any statement in response to the former president\u2019s arrest Tuesday. He didn\u2019t say anything when <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of Trump\u2019s indictment broke Thursday, either. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he put out a statement welcoming Finland\u2019s accession to NATO, something he has championed since last year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Al Cross, a professor of journalism at the University of Kentucky and a longtime commentator on McConnell\u2019s career, said McConnell doesn\u2019t feel the same pressure as other Republicans to rally around Trump. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMitch McConnell does not feel pressure in the same way that other human beings do. He has steeled himself to resist the typical politician\u2019s urge to talk and it\u2019s paid off for him, you don\u2019t get in trouble for something you didn\u2019t say,\u201d he said. \u201cHis strategy with Trump has been to not come close to that kryptonite and let other people do the talking and work behind the scenes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Cross speculated that McConnell doesn\u2019t want to put himself out on a limb by defending Trump when the former president is facing additional possible indictments. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be other shoes to drop and I expect Mitch McConnell knows more about Donald Trump\u2019s situation than we do,\u201d he added. \u201cHe is one of the most influential and best-informed people in the country and has all kinds of sources of information and he probably sees other things coming.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scott Jennings, a Republican strategist who has advised McConnell\u2019s past campaigns, noted the Senate GOP leader is sticking to his strategy of staying clear of Trump, who has attacked him repeatedly over the past two years. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s sort of not mentioned Trump at all since December of 2020. He\u2019s pretty much taken a I\u2019m-going-to-ignore-this-guy approach. So, I think this is just a continuation of that,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this circus today reinforces a larger dynamic \u2014 the American people want anything but a Trump\/Biden rematch in \u201924,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McConnell is trying to lessen the former president\u2019s political influence in GOP politics.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He told reporters in February that \u201cwe\u2019re focusing now to try to get the very most electable candidate[s] nominated\u201d in West Virginia, Montana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McConnell\u2019s cautious handling of Trump\u2019s indictment contrasts starkly from Speaker Kevin McCarthy\u2019s (R-Calif.) reaction. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy tweeted on Tuesday that \u201cBragg is attempting to interfere in our democratic process by invoking federal law to\u00a0bring politicized charges against President Trump, admittedly using federal funds, while at the same time arguing that the peoples\u2019 representatives in Congress lack jurisdiction to investigate this farce. Not so. Bragg\u2019s weaponization of the federal justice process will be held accountable by Congress.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Even Trump\u2019s biggest critic in the Senate GOP conference, Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah), called out Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law. The prosecutor\u2019s overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damages the public\u2019s faith in our justice system,\u201d Romney warned. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans are split over whether Congress should step into the legal battle by investigating Bragg and potentially withhold any federal grants that support his office. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), an adviser to the Senate Republican leadership team, told reporters last month that he thought House Republicans should stay focused on the agenda that got them elected to the majority last year instead of wading into battle with Bragg.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a newly promoted counselor to the Senate GOP leadership team, said in a statement Tuesday that \u201cpolitics should never tip the scales of justice, and Congress has every right to demand answers and accountability from the Manhattan D.A.\u2019s office.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One Republican strategist who requested anonymity because he expects to work for one of Trump\u2019s primary rivals said the indictment might help Trump in the short term by fueling his fundraising and spurring Republicans to rally his defense but predicted it will hurt him politically over the long term. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cShort term, what we\u2019ve seen will continue, they\u2019re going to rally around the president because it feels political,\u201d the strategist said, noting that Bragg was elected in an overwhelmingly Democratic jurisdiction and backed by Color of Change PAC, which accepted funding from billionaire George Soros. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the strategist thinks the charges will begin to weigh on Trump as the case drags on and people become more familiar with the details. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the 34 counts come out and people get more into the details and see what happens in Georgia and what happens on the federal level.
