{"id":569420,"date":"2023-04-08T16:42:12","date_gmt":"2023-04-08T13:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/democrats-ask-chief-justice-to-investigate-clarence-thomas-trips-it-is-your-duty\/"},"modified":"2023-04-08T16:42:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T13:42:12","slug":"democrats-ask-chief-justice-to-investigate-clarence-thomas-trips-it-is-your-duty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/democrats-ask-chief-justice-to-investigate-clarence-thomas-trips-it-is-your-duty\/","title":{"rendered":"#Democrats ask chief justice to investigate Clarence Thomas trips: \u2018It is your duty\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/AP22181538556374-e1662820894111.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A group of 16 congressional Democrats asked Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to investigate the luxury <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s that Justice Clarence Thomas has accepted from a major Republican donor for more than two decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eight senators and eight representatives sent Roberts a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaine.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/letter_to_chief_justice_re_justice_thomas_and_ethics.pdf\">letter<\/a> on Friday to urge him to initiate an investigation into any unethical and \u201cpotentially unlawful\u201d conduct that Thomas might have committed. The letter states that the court has \u201cbarely acknowledged\u201d the allegations so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that it is your duty as Chief Justice \u2018to safeguard public faith in the judiciary,\u2019 and that fulfilling that duty requires swift, thorough, independent and transparent investigation into these allegations,\u201d the letter reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ProPublica first <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/clarence-thomas-scotus-undisclosed-luxury-travel-gifts-crow\">reported<\/a> on Thursday on the trips that Thomas has received over the years from billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow, going on cruises on Crow\u2019s yacht, flying on his private jet and engaging with Crow\u2019s \u201cpowerful\u201d friends at his private resort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crow is a Dallas-based real estate developer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The outlet reported that some of these gifts are worth more than $500,000, but Thomas has not disclosed any of them during the years he received them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said in response to the report that he was \u201cadvised\u201d that he did not need to disclose any of the trips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly in my tenure at the Court, I sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary, and was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The letter from the Democrats states that finance disclosure laws require top officials, including Supreme Court justices, to annually report these types of gifts. It said \u201climited\u201d exceptions exist for the law to allow officials to \u201cenjoy hospitality in the course of ordinary, personal friendships\u201d but not for them to \u201chide from the public extravagant gifts by wealthy political interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The signers said an investigation should look into who accompanied Thomas on these trips. They said they \u201chave reason to believe\u201d that Crow is connected to multiple groups that have filed amicus briefs to the court, but the public does not know if anyone else on these trips had interests connected to Thomas\u2019 \u201cofficial duties.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They said they will urge Congress to act to \u201crestore ethics and accountability\u201d on the court if Roberts does not act.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt is well past time for the Supreme Court to align with the rest of government in a proper code of ethics enforced by independent investigation and reporting,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
