\n MGM+ has greenlit a new four-part docuseries<\/a> that will tackle the experience of Black creatives in Hollywood over the course of a century.<\/p>\n

\n The linear channel and streaming service has ordered an adaptation of historian Donald Bogle\u2019s 2019 book Hollywood Black<\/em> from director Justin Simien (Dear White People<\/em>), it announced on Tuesday. The docuseries, from Simien\u2019s Culture Machine as well as Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi\u2019s Significant Productions and RadicalMedia<\/a>, will chronicle the careers of pioneering directors, actors, producers and writers \u201cwho fought for their place on the page, behind the camera, on the screen, and in the credits,\u201d MGM+ said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\n Simien and Kyle Laursen from Culture Machine, Whitaker and Yang Bongiovi from Significant Productions and Dave Sirulnick, Stacey Reiss and Jon Kamen from RadicalMedia will all executive produce. Amy Goodman Kass (I Love You, You Hate Me<\/em>) will serve as showrunner as Simien directs.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cHollywood, like many\u00a0American industries, was built on Black culture and Black talent,\u00a0even\u00a0though it excluded\u00a0Black people from many of its origin stories,\u201d Simien stated. \u201cThis series seeks to illuminate present-day controversies, from #OscarSoWhite to the almost regular \u2018blackface reveal\u2019 of prominent white celebrities, told\u00a0through the lens of Black individuals\u00a0throughout Hollywood history.\u201d Simien called it \u201cthe most important story I\u2019ve been able\u00a0to tell\u00a0to date.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Bogle, a prominent historian of Black film history, explored figures like Dorothy Dandridge, Sidney Poitier, John Singleton and Barry Jenkins as he told a story from the silent era through to the present day in the book that served as the series\u2019 inspiration.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cHollywood Black<\/em>,\u00a0like other recent MGM+ docuseries, is an entertaining and thoughtful look at a vital part of American culture, examining\u00a0the evolution of Black cinema and the talented artists who built it,\u201d MGM+ head Michael Wright said in a statement. \u201cIt is a timely and relevant look at the Black experience in Hollywood.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
