{"id":569835,"date":"2023-04-12T00:14:26","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T21:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/lawmakers-press-pentagon-for-answers-on-intelligence-leak\/"},"modified":"2023-04-12T00:14:26","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T21:14:26","slug":"lawmakers-press-pentagon-for-answers-on-intelligence-leak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/lawmakers-press-pentagon-for-answers-on-intelligence-leak\/","title":{"rendered":"#Lawmakers press Pentagon for answers on intelligence leak"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Lawmakers want answers from the Pentagon and Justice Department on leaked classified documents surrounding the war in Ukraine, with several congressional committees demanding briefings from the Biden administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, the leaked material includes warnings of weaknesses in Ukraine\u2019s capabilities \u2014 specifically in air defense and shortfalls of ammunition as Kyiv prepares for a new counteroffensive \u2014 as well as bruising intelligence on allies, partners and adversaries alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Defense Department and the Department of Justice have said they will investigate the leak, which came in the middle of a two-week congressional recess, but lawmakers are expecting more information when they return to Capitol Hill next week, particularly on when intelligence agencies discovered the papers had made it online and how they responded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called for all senators to be briefed on the leak at some point after they return, a spokesman for the Democratic leader said on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.) also on Tuesday said that he is \u201cclosely engaged\u201d with top intelligence officials and \u201cwill continue to follow this situation closely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny leak of classified information is extremely alarming,\u201d Warner said in a statement. \u201cAs the Pentagon investigates this matter, Americans should remember that Russia has a long history of disinformation efforts and it would be wise to be wary of trusting any claims they see online relating to these documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/warnermark_032223gn03_w.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) addresses reporters following the weekly policy luncheon on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Later Tuesday, Warner told NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> he had received a preliminary briefing but <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared frustrated\u00a0on the answers he had received.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFinding out when the community discovered that these documents were gone, when they started to appear on the internet, even if it was in a remote site \u2026\u00a0\u00a0I expect to get those answers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Across the Capitol, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) told CBS News that he was briefed on the situation on Monday and that the case could amount to espionage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously this is very detrimental \u2026 We don\u2019t know what else might be coming or what else they have access to,\u201d Turner told CBS on Monday. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to find the source and to close down this source.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve shown the extent to which the United States and Ukraine are aware of what Russia\u2019s doing,\u201d Turner added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        US intelligence leak deals severe blow to Ukraine war effort<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>At least 100 documents began appearing online possibly as early as January on Discord and other chat forum sites. Last week, images of the papers spilled over to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> and Telegram and picked up attention. The material includes dozens of classified U.S. and NATO documents, some labeled \u201cTop Secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pentagon spokesman Chris Meagher on Monday <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2023\/04\/10\/leaked-documents-ukraine-counteroffensive\/\">declined to discuss<\/a> the veracity of the documents but allowed that the papers are similar in format to those used to provide daily updates to senior defense leaders on Ukraine- and Russia-related operations, as well as other intelligence updates. (Greg Nash)<\/em><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The House and Senate Armed Services panels have also demanded answers from the administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Ala.)\u00a0said in a statement that the reports of the intelligence leaks \u201care incredibly concerning,\u201d and that the panel was \u201cactively seeking answers from the Department of Defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And a spokesperson for Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed (D-R.I.) said he is tracking the issue closely and has requested a briefing from the administration, though details were still up in the air.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Reed \u201cbelieves that breaches of U.S. national security and intelligence must always be addressed with the utmost seriousness and urgency. The Department of Defense and other agencies have launched investigations, and the Senate Armed Service Committee expects to be fully briefed on the Pentagon\u2019s investigation as it proceeds,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        The 5 biggest US intelligence leaks<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Pentagon said earlier this week that Austin became aware of the leak on April 6, while President Biden was informed of it late last week, according to the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Austin would not comment on the Justice Department\u2019s ongoing investigation but said the Pentagon takes the leak \u201cvery seriously.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will tell you that we take this very seriously, and we will continue to investigate and turn over every rock until we find the source of this and the extent of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
